A heartbreaking incident at a Las Vegas grooming salon has left a dog owner devastated. The owner claims her beloved dog was paralyzed at the salon. Following this, she had no choice but to euthanize her pet.

Groomer allegedly paralyzed Maltese-Yorkie mix dog

After a visit to Lucky’s Pet Grooming and Boutique in Las Vegas, Makisha Davis alleged that her cherished pet was left paralyzed. Due to this, she had to opt for the euthanization of Tuffy, a 4-year-old Maltese and Yorkie mix, as per KTNV.

Upon retrieving Tuffy in December 2023, Davis harbored concerns regarding an apparent injury sustained during a grooming session. This prompted a discussion with the salon staff. However, Davis claimed their response only intensified her frustration and anguish. 

Davis described the situation, “I’m looking at her [Tuffy’s] legs, and her legs are straight, not a bend to them at all.” Continuing, she added, “The lady [at the salon] says… ‘You gave her to us like this,’ and I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t. I did not give my dog to you like this.’”

Subsequently, a veterinarian visit revealed Tuffy had suffered a ruptured disk in her back, resulting in paralysis. Davis recounted how the veterinarian informed her that the required surgery would come with a hefty price tag of over $10,000. This left the dog owner with a difficult choice.

As a result, Davis had to put down her furry friend.

Despite Davis reporting the incident to animal control, she was informed there was nothing that could be done due to a lack of evidence.

In a similar incident, Margarita Bicana received the same response three years ago when her dog Turbina allegedly suffered a fracture in their jaw at this grooming salon only.

The grooming salon now has several 1-star reviews on Google. Multiple pet owners have shared images, videos, and comments, blaming the staff for their pets’ injuries.

Recognizing that all pets — regardless of their breed — deserve love, care, and attention, they are set on providing a positive grooming experience for these misunderstood canines.

Leeds grooming business welcomes XL Bullies

Following the ban of the American XL Bully breed by the British government last year due to the alarming number of fatal dog attacks involving these breeds, many businesses started turning away these dogs. Jackson and Birch, owners of the LS RAW Grooming & Accessories in Leeds, have courageously chosen a different path.

“We are treating those dogs no different, we don’t want owners to have to worry about being able to take their dog to a groomers,” said Jackson, a proud owner of a Pocket Bully herself.

Their stand has prompted owners of XL Bullies, rejected elsewhere, to flood their phone lines, highlighting the demand for their unique service. Jackson insists they want to create a normal experience for the dogs at their facility, one where they don’t require muzzles, thanks to their comprehensive insurance.

Understanding why people have reacted negatively towards the breed, Jackson empathizes, “But, there is no need in how harsh it has been… especially with the amount of people who have dogs that are more aggressive than XLs.” Continuing, she added, “We just want to do a positive thing. I have my own branded muzzles coming, which will be comfortable for the dogs to wear.”

Besides running their grooming business, Jackson and Birch also devote their time and resources to supporting dog rescue centers and the local community — as per LeedsLive. As Jackson expressed, they strive to do as much as they can, given the difficult circumstances.

The holidays are the time for makeovers, so why should rescue dogs be left behind? As KARE 11 reports, Adore Dog Salon in Minnesota provided a festive makeover to the dogs at Underdog Rescue MN. The foster-focused nonprofit aims to increase the dogs’ prospects for adoption during this holiday season.

Anne Hendrickson and her children welcomed a dog from a Missouri puppy mill, a two-year-old Cockapoo. Underdog Rescue made the match. Unfortunately, the dog is unwell, suffering from an ear infection, as well as from Giardia — a parasite.

Describing the dog’s condition, Hendrickson explained, “She was matted to the skin and constantly biting at her skin due to the pain.”

She calls the dog Princess Peach, even though “her name on the website is Felicity.”

Princess Peach, along with her two puppies, moved in with Hendrickson about a month ago. While the animals settled into their new home, Princess Peach ventured out on Nov. 10, receiving a free makeover session at Adore Dog Salon. 

In Hendrickson’s words, “Despite all that neglect, she still took such good care of her babies.” Continuing, she added, “I’m glad today at Adore Salon, she got to be the one taken care of for once.”

Festive bandanas and ribbons for a dozen foster dogs 

Adore Dog Salon is located near the rescue’s headquarters in St. Louis Park. The business gave new holiday looks to almost a dozen dogs. According to the salon owner, Isadora Foley, all groomers volunteered their services for the day, sprucing up the dogs in holiday style.

In addition to baths, blowouts, fur cuts, and nail trims, the dogs were adorned in Christmassy bandanas. The pups also got to sport red and green ribbon curls on their ears. 

Foley mentioned that they’ve done donation grooming twice this year, and had even hosted a similar event last year as well. She credited her team with the collaborative effort, which they all hope will expedite the adoption process for these dogs.

Kirsten Eitreim is a professional pet photographer who has adopted two rescue dogs from the organization. She also came forward to volunteer for the event. As such, she took before and after photos that will go on the online profile of each dog. 

Eitreim described the pups, saying, “They come out of just a bath and a blow dry, and they already look 10 times better and it’s amazing.”

In fact, Princess Peach ended up looking exactly like a princess. Her foster parent exclaimed, “And whoever gets her is going to get a really special, amazing dog.”

Foley explained that while some of the dogs visiting the salon are already featured on Underdog Rescue’s website, others have yet to be listed. Presently, the website showcases over 80 adoptable dogs and puppies, along with details about the adoption process.

By now, you’ve heard about dog grooming star Gabriel Feitosa. The Brazilian dog groomer banks $1.3 million a year providing canines with impeccable coifs in California. But what you may not know is that Feitosa is lending his services, free of charge, to shelter pups looking for forever homes. In a new collab with the San Diego Humane Society, Feitosa is beautifying fur babies eligible for adoption.

Dog grooming star helps shelter dogs

According to KPBS, Feitosa has teamed up with the San Diego Humane Society to offer grooming for its tough-to-place pooches. The shelter is overrun with more dogs than they can care for. Currently, they house more than 1,100 dogs across multiple campuses. That puts them at 170% of capacity.

So, last December, Feitosa contacted the organization to see how he could help the dogs they serve.

“I was trying to find a way to give back,” Feitosa told KPBS. “So I reached out to the Humane Society and said, ‘Hey guys, what if we transform your guys’s dogs and bring attention not only for the dogs who are (not) getting to get adopted right away, but to the cause?'”

It was an offer the humane society couldn’t refuse.

More than a makeover

Feitosa focuses on dogs that often get overlooked, like senior dogs and large-breed dogs. Among his clients on a recent trip to the humane society’s El Cajon campus was a three-legged dog named Minnow. Feitosa turned the tiny canine into a tiger with strategically-placed dye (which was vegan and non-toxic).

A much bigger dog named Nyla also got a makeover. The fluffy white pup received rainbow hues on her ears and tail.

After the dogs get dyed, they receive a bath, blow dry, and a trim. Then they’re ready for their close-up – on Feitosa’s wildly popular TikTok and Instagram channels.

As if these random acts of kindness weren’t enough, Feitosa also pays for the adoption fees and any other costs his special clients incur at the shelter.

“It fills me with joy, especially because we focus on transforming the dogs that actually need more attention,” he told KPBS. “When I hear that those guys get adopted, I’m just like over the moon. I’m just grateful that I get to do it.”

If you have seen your dog rub or roll on the rug, or chew and lick at their fur, you have witnessed their attempt at self-grooming. Have you ever tried to give yourself a haircut? Then you know we can all use a little help sometimes, even Fido. But if you think you need to go to a groomer every time your pup’s mane looks a little wild, think again. Wash, cut, brush, and dry. Rinse and repeat. That’s about all it takes. You (yes, you!) can keep your dog well-groomed! All you need are a few solid home grooming tips for dog parents.

Grooming should be a pleasure

A grooming session could be a challenge for you and your dog, especially if they are excitable or not used to you touching them. Here are some methods to help pave the way for an enjoyable experience for both of you:

• Only groom your dog when they are calm, perhaps after a walk or a play period.
• Keep your first grooming session short (five to 10 minutes) until your dog becomes used to being handled this way. Slowly add more time to the sessions until there is enough time for you to do proper grooming.
• You can get a head start on making them feel at ease by petting all over their body, including touchy areas like tails, paws, stomach, and ears.
• Praise your pup all throughout the grooming and be sure to offer a tasty treat when you are through. They’ll soon come to think of it as a pleasant experience.

Combing and brushing

Dogs naturally gather dirt, grass, weeds, and other irritants in their fur. Brushing or combing regularly will help keep your dog’s coat and skin clean and healthy. Different coats require different tools and procedures.

Smooth, short-coat dogs like Chihuahuas, Beagles, or Doberman Pinschers only need weekly grooming:

• First, loosen dead skin and dirt by using a soft bristle brush (like those made for puppies) made of rubber or plastic.
• Next, use a stiffer bristle brush to take out dead hair.
• Lastly, rub a chamois cloth over her body to give it a nice sheen, and your easy-grooming dog is ready to go.

Short- and/or thick-coated dogs like Labrador Retrievers and Huskies can be prone to matting. Here is a weekly routine to help control those irritating mats:

• Use a slicker-style brush to remove tangles.
• Pick up dead hair with a bristle brush.
• Don’t forget to pull a comb through their tail.

For a long, luxurious coat, such as that of a Cocker Spaniel, you need to perform some grooming steps each day:

• Use a slicker brush to smooth out tangles and remove matting.
• Next, brush the coat with a bristle-style brush.
• For dogs with very long hair, like an Afghan Hound, include the area around their feet (known as the hock). You may also need to trim this area regularly.

Baths and grooming

Veterinarians and other pet specialists recommend that you bathe your dog at least every three months. Your dog may require more frequent baths, especially if they spend more time in the yard or outside. Shampoos should be mild and approved for use on dogs to avoid skin irritation.

Follow these simple steps to bathing success:

• Before bathing, brush your dog to remove any dead hair or mats.
• Place a bath mat made of rubber in the tub to keep your pooch from slipping and sliding. Use lukewarm water, filling the tub to a maximum of 4 inches.
• If available, use a hand-held showerhead to dampen your dog from head to tail. Be careful not to aim the nozzle directly into their ears, nose, or eyes. If you don’t have a hand-held showerhead, a large pitcher or plastic container will do.
• Lather in the shampoo all over the coat.
• Thoroughly rinse the shampoo, steering clear of the ears, eyes, and nose.
• This is a good time to check your dog’s ears for odors or dirt. Use a vet-approved solution on a cotton ball to clean the ears. Do not insert the cotton into the canal.
• Use a large towel and, if needed, a hair dryer set on low heat to dry your dog. Many dogs will want to run outside and rub all over the grass or dirt right after a bath. Confining them to the house for a little while will prevent having to repeat the whole process immediately.

Many dogs squirm and wriggle during a bath, especially young puppies. Puppies may also nip at you as you try to bathe and brush them. Toys and treats can help redirect their focus during grooming.

Trimming nails

Handling your dog from tip to toe to tail from the time they are very young will help you accomplish this sometimes unsettling task. Through gentle massage and reassurance, you can get your dog used to you touching them in some of the most sensitive areas, including their nails. By doing this for at least two weeks before attempting to trim your dog’s nails, they will probably be open to it.

Here are the steps for a successful nail trim:

• Examine each of the paws for grime and weeds, especially burs and foxtails, cleaning as needed.
• Using sharp, guillotine-style dog nail trimmers, snip the tip of each nail at a slight angle, just prior to where the nail curves.
• Stay away from the quick (a vein that runs into the nail). On many dogs, you can see the quick as a pink area within the nail. In some dogs, the nail may be too black to see the quick, so trim carefully. A smaller cut may be in order in this case.
• If you do unintentionally trim into the quick, bleeding may result. Keep a styptic powder or cream on hand to stem the bleeding.
• Use an emery board or file to smooth any jagged ends on cut nails.

Some breeds have unique needs

Breeds such as Pugs and Shar-Peis have loose skin and wrinkles. These dogs will require more attention during the grooming process.

First, to prevent grime and even bacteria from becoming a problem, clean between the folds of their skin with damp cotton and then dry well. Keeping these areas dry is also important after a bath or a walk in the rain.

Long droopy ears such as those on a Basset Hound or Cocker Spaniel must be checked weekly for buildups of wax and dirt. A cotton wad with a little water or mineral oil can help keep the ears clean and dry. Drops specifically designed to clean and dry the canal should also be applied for these ear infection-prone dogs. Hair that grows around the canal entrance should be kept trimmed. You can check with a professional groomer or veterinarian for instructions on how to properly and safely do this. Special tools may be available for this unique task.

Although dogs do some things to keep their coats neat and clean on their own, they need your help with tasks that require opposable thumbs, such as brushing.

Regular brushing removes excess hair from your dog’s coat and cuts down significantly on the amount of hair you have to deal with on your furniture, car, and your favorite black pants. It also helps distribute the natural oils in your dog’s fur and skin, keeping their coat healthy and looking its best.

Brushing is also a great way to check your dog’s health. While you brush, look at the condition of your dog’s coat. Is it matted or tangled? Dry or oily? Also look for lumps, ticks, fleas, hair mats, cuts, and anything that looks unusual.

As they age, they’ll get a few more bumps and lumps all over. On the off chance one of those lumps isn’t harmless, it’s better to discover it sooner rather than later.

Brushing basics

Brushing really is pretty basic. You just need to understand the type of coat your dog has, and that determines how often you need to brush and what type of brush to use.

You should ask your vet or groomer for more individualized instructions. Here are some general rules for grooming:

• Long-haired breeds, such as Collies and Tibetan Terriers, need to be brushed weekly, sometimes more often if the coat seems particularly tangled. A pin brush is a good choice for these breeds because its bristles grip the undercoat and remove loose hairs without causing pain. It can also get down to the skin. Start close to the skin and brush away from it. Use a comb to tease out any mats.
• Short-coated dogs, such as Labrador Retrievers and Greyhounds, don’t need frequent brushing because their hair doesn’t mat and tangle easily. Still, you may want to brush them every couple of weeks to remove loose hair. Use a rubber brush or grooming glove, which will help bring dirt and loose hair to the surface. The gloves fit over your hands, so your dog will think you’re petting them and won’t suspect you’re actually brushing. If you prefer a conventional brush, short coats can take a stiff, natural-bristle brush or a soft slicker brush, which has little, bent-metal pins in it. Follow up with a soft-bristle brush, which helps distribute the hair’s natural oils.
• Short, wiry breeds, such as Dachshunds and most Terriers, need a slicker brush, followed by a once-over with a metal comb. Once every few days should do. A stripping knife will remove the dead hair in the undercoat. Have someone knowledgeable show you how to use one before you try. If the coat has mats, work those out first.

How to brush your dog

Now that you’ve got the right equipment and you know how often your dog needs a good brushing, make sure you’ve got the right technique.

Here are a few guidelines to help you out:

• Brush down and out, away from the dog’s skin. Always brush in the direction the coat grows. Dogs don’t like to be brushed backward.
• Be gentle or you may damage your dog’s coat by pulling hairs until they tangle and break. Take the time to untangle any snags.
• If you encounter mats, apply a coat conditioner or mat spray. Leave it on for several minutes. Then use a wide-toothed comb or a mat-splitting tool to get through the tangle. Mats can get close to a dog’s skin, and removing them can be painful, so proceed carefully. You can cut out mats with scissors, but be careful you don’t end up at the vet for stitches; it happens more often than you’d think. If you just can’t get a mat out, take your dog to a groomer who will probably shave the area.

When to go with the pros

While it’s true that you don’t need a pro to brush your dog, there’s no shame in taking your dog to a groomer. They’re in the business for good reason!

You know how you can never get your hair to look as good as your stylist does? Well, the same is true for your dog.

Besides, some level of skill is called for if your dog’s coat tends to get matted. And if your dog really doesn’t enjoy their beauty routine, you’ll find that experienced groomers are good at sweet-talking even the most scaredy-cat dog into relaxing.

Even dogs who feel that baths are cruel and unusual punishment have to get one once in a while. While some dogs with short coats can get away with just a water rinse, most dogs need shampoo. Why do dogs need their own kind of shampoo? Why can’t they just use whatever you use on yourself — or your baby?

Well, human shampoos can actually harm dogs’ coats. Dog shampoo manufacturers say their products are gentle enough to prevent stripping the natural oils in a dog’s coat but strong enough to get out the dirt.

And here’s an item that may not make you feel very good about your own beauty regimen: Some of the shampoos designed for human hair may irritate your dog’s skin because they can contain harsher detergents.

So use shampoos labeled specifically for dogs, or a gentle human baby shampoo that your veterinarian recommends. Here’s what you should know about dog shampoo.

The best shampoo is one that suits your needs

There are tons of different kinds of dog shampoos, just like there are different kinds of human shampoos. The best way to figure out which one your dog needs is to ask your veterinarian or professional groomer for advice.

Some dog shampoos are designed for certain types of coats, and some are specifically for puppies. There are lots of things to consider!

Here are a few of the kinds of dog shampoo you might need to look for:

• No more tears: Just as we have baby shampoos, there are very gentle puppy shampoos available.
• Brightening/whitening: These are for dogs who are supposed to be sparkling white after a bath, as opposed to the beige mess they were beforehand.
• Waterless or rinse-free: Using a dry shampoo or powder will minimally clean up the dirt, but they’re intended only for quick fixes. Your dog won’t get super clean, and a few days later, the coat can feel even dirtier or stickier than before you used it.
• Deodorizing: These shampoos are an excellent idea for a dog who just rolled in a dead rodent or fresh poop. Keep in mind, deodorizing shampoos may not always be powerful enough to alleviate “eau de skunk.”
• Stamping out skunk: Technically this isn’t shampoo, but it’s more effective on skunk stink than deodorizing shampoo or that useless tomato-based mixture. Combine 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. Mix and apply immediately, then rinse thoroughly.

Medicated shampoos for special conditions

Medicated shampoos can help you deal with certain problems — like helping to keep away fleas, ease itching, and heal mange. They’re much harder to use, though, for the simple fact that, in order to be at all effective, most have to remain on your dog for 10 minutes before rinsing.

That’s 10 solid minutes on a soaking wet, icky-smelling, annoyed canine who thinks 30 seconds is a long time. So cover the bathroom floor with plenty of towels before you begin the process.

Here are a few types of medicated shampoos for dogs:

• Flea and tick: These shampoos help keep the parasites at bay. Some are also effective against lice.
• Hypoallergenic: Look for one of these shampoos if you have dogs with allergies or sensitivity to fragrances or other ingredients in regular shampoos.
• Anti-itch: These shampoos contain anti-itch and anti-inflammatory properties, such as hydrocortisone or lidocaine. You can purchase most of them over the counter.
• Prescription: For some conditions, such as mange, your veterinarian may prescribe medicated shampoo as part of the treatment.

Maybe you want to save some cash by doing the grooming yourself instead of relying on professionals. However, there’s a reason dog groomers charge what they do — they know what they’re doing.

Still, if you’re willing to learn and put in the effort, you can do a fairly good job of keeping your dog from looking too scruffy on your own. If you do decide to groom your dog yourself, here are a few mistakes you should avoid.

1. Failing to train your dog

If you want to groom your dog without causing anxiety, injury, or a mess, you absolutely must train your dog for grooming. That means starting as early in life as possible.

You should work on making sure your dog is comfortable with being touched on the face, paws, tail, and entire body. They also need to get comfortable with potentially buzzing or noisy grooming equipment.

They should also get accustomed to other people touching them, as you may wish to rely on a groomer someday, and you don’t want your dog to be fearful or nip.

Even for dogs adopted later in life, it’s important to get comfortable with grooming. Create as stress-free of an environment as possible, and give your dog plenty of praise and rewards while bathing and brushing teeth and fur.

Make it a positive experience, and be patient. Your dog may be nervous at first but keep at it. This will reduce the chance of your dog exhibiting anxious behavior that will make grooming miserable for you and your pooch.

2. Failing to brush before getting wet

This is especially important for dogs with long hair, which easily mats when getting wet. Long hair is also more likely to get tangled in water, which can make for some pretty painful brushing later on.

A quick brush before getting wet will loosen any dead hair tangled in the coat, which can prevent discomfort when you brush or cut your dog’s hair after the bath.

3. Failing to brush after getting wet

In addition to brushing before a bath, you must also brush after a bath.

This will be much easier and more painless if you’ve brushed beforehand, and it’s important because the bathing process can loosen more dead hair. These hairs can get tangled in the coat if they’re left there, so remember that brushing is always a before and after activity.

4. Not grooming in winter

Many dog parents worry that if they cut their dog’s hair in the colder months, their pups will be cold. So they go on without giving their dogs haircuts, but they also neglect other grooming responsibilities.

This results in severe matting before the warmer months even come around, and the only fix at that point is to give the coat a short shave, which is the opposite of what pet parents want in winter. Not to mention, the added fur length doesn’t help dogs stay that much warmer in winter.

Keep up with brushing and bathing, and at least give your dog’s coat a trim. This will help avoid matted, tangled hair while letting your pup’s natural coat keep them warm.

You don’t need to give your dog a full shave, but keep up with the maintenance of their fur.

5. Being inconsistent

Just because it’s not time for a bath, haircut, and full-on grooming session doesn’t mean you can let up on the basic things like brushing.

Some dog parents don’t plan on giving their dog a grooming session during a certain time of the year. Or, they may go several weeks without the need to give their dog a bath or haircut. But it’s still important to keep up with the motions of grooming so dogs don’t forget what it feels like. Doing so will result in less stress when you do get around to a full grooming session.

6. Not being thorough

Brushing your dog’s back is fairly easy. Unfortunately, many pet parents forget that there’s an entire dog body attached to that back that needs brushing.

Fur around the belly, armpits, tail, ears, neck, and face all need care, too, especially because these parts are where pests and parasites like to infest.

Caring for these places on your dog’s body and removing tangles and mats won’t just help them look good. It will help maintain their health, too.

7. Cutting nails incorrectly

Nail trimming is a challenge for most dog parents, and it’s one of the reasons you should focus on getting your dog used to having their paws handled during training.

Don’t rush into nail clipping, and make sure you use sharp clippers. Replace them regularly. Dull clippers crush nails instead of cutting them, and they can slip and lead to injury.

Make sure you know how to spot the quick of the nails. If your dog has light-colored nails, you’ll probably be able to see the quick as a pink circle around each nail. If your dog has dark nails, the quick might only be visible as a black circle when you cut into the nail.

Go slowly and do not cut the quick, as it will cause bleeding and pain. If you’re unsure of how to do this, ask your veterinarian or a professional groomer for advice.

8. Shaving too close

Cutting too close to the skin with clippers can leave razor burn, especially if the blades are dull or broken. Razor burn can become infected when left untreated.

Always make sure your clippers have sharp, new blades, as these are less likely to catch and skip. Not only will this protect your dog’s skin, but it will help you cut your dog’s coat more evenly.

9. Getting shampoo in the eyes

This can happen when dog parents are being careless or moving too quickly. Take special care when bathing the face and head.

While many modern dog shampoos are safe for contact with the eyes, they’re still likely to cause discomfort, and that irritation can make bath time all the more stressful.

Go slowly, rinse thoroughly, and make sure to avoid or cover your dog’s eyes.

10. Letting the dog outside right after grooming

Lots of dogs go wild after bath time, even if they’re thoroughly dry. One of the first things they like to do is run and roll in things.

There are lots of reasons dogs might do this, but it’s important that you keep your dog inside immediately after grooming unless you want them to come back in covered in dirt and whatever else they can roll in outside. You’ll have to start the whole grooming process over if that happens. Give your dog time to work the zoomies out indoors before you let them outside.
