On July 5, while many people relax after Independence Day, others spend their time desperately searching for their lost pets. These could be dogs who, frightened by the fireworks displays on July 4th, escaped the yard. It might even be indoor-outdoor cats who usually come inside when called but are nowhere to be found after the neighbor’s late-night firecracker marathon. As such, animal shelters all across the country are busy prepping for July 5, their busiest day of the year.

Jess Wnuk is the Executive Director of Grand Strand Humane Society in Myrtle Beach. She said that although people love their pets, the celebration is lost on them. During a 2023 interview with ABC-affiliate WPDE, Wnuk shared, “People want their dogs out with them at BBQs, family get-togethers.” She continued, “It’s so important that you make sure your pet is secure.” Emphasizing the importance of “hav[ing] proper identification,” Wnuk added that dogs are often “spooked with fireworks, loud noises, extra traffic.”

Why the day after the 4th of July is hard on dogs and shelters

(Photo Credit: Aja Koska | Getty Images)

For animal control officers and dog rescuers, it’s hard to enjoy any sort of July 4th celebration knowing what is to come. Upsettingly, animal shelters and rescues across the country spend every year preparing for the onslaught of intakes on the morning of July 5. This is particularly difficult to manage for many shelters that are already overcrowded, short-staffed, and underfunded. And that’s before the human toll of processing all of these lost and missing animals is factored in. The heartbreaking truth is even if a dog makes it to the shelter, it may not make it back to their family.

What’s more, some dogs arrive with devastating injuries as a result of the disorientation suffered from fleeing from firecrackers. Digging under chain link fences can also leave a few marks. Even worse, some pets get hit by cars on busy roads. Most are too focused on escaping loud noises to notice oncoming traffic. Making matters worse, there also tends to be a higher number of intoxicated drivers during the 4th of July holiday. Dogs might have to suffer for hours on the roadside awaiting a Good Samaritan who will help.

However, there’s some good news! Here are several preventative measures you can take to make sure your pet doesn’t become a statistic this Independence Day.

How to keep your dog safe on Independence Day and avoid a stressful July 5

(Photo Credit: FatCamera | Getty Images)

Leave pets safely at home, inside a cool room, and behind secure doors. Avoid leaving any windows unlatched, especially for dogs who could easily jostle a screen open.

Try playing classical or relaxing music on a radio or leaving the television on to drown out the noise outside.

Do not leave your pet unsupervised, even in a fenced yard. Frightened dogs, startled by fireworks, are more likely to jump fences to try and escape the noise. If you’re not staying home with your pup, find someone they are comfortable with to stay over while you’re out celebrating.

Do not leave your pet tied up outside. Animals scared by fireworks can strangle themselves to try and break free.

Most importantly, make sure your pet’s identification tags and microchip information are up-to-date with your current contact information.

July 4th — Independence Day — is arguably the most American holiday there is. Friends, fun, and food come to mind, and it’s an especially great day to have a dog. Pups can be real party animals as they run around playing and trying to steal hot dogs while you’re hanging with family and friends.

Fun and games aside, what’s extremely important for dog parents before celebrating July 4th is to make sure our dogs have updated tags and well-fitting collars. While it should go without saying that your dog needs a reliable collar or harness, it’s especially important this holiday. Heartbreakingly, July 5th is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters.

What does that mean for your dog? Why do you need to update their ID prior to the holiday? Here’s what you should know to keep your pup safe from going missing as you witness the rocket’s red glare.

Too many dogs get lost on July 4th

Understandably, many dogs are terrified of the loud noises of fireworks. If your dog’s anxiety surfaces during thunderstorms, it’s almost guaranteed they’ll feel nervous around the loud booms and flashes of fireworks.

If you have a new dog — one who wasn’t living with you last 4th of July — it’s extremely important to prepare since you don’t know how this new dog will behave or how they’ll react to loud noises.

A dog’s instincts usually tell them to run away from loud sounds like fireworks. Even a dog who is in a yard might be so scared they jump a high fence or dig a hole under it to get out and run in fear.

This is why the day after Independence Day, July 5th, is so busy at animal shelters. They get inundated with lost pets who bolted out of fear during the previous night’s celebrations. If, God forbid, this happens to you, at least you’ll have a better chance of your dog returning if you take the proper precautions in advance.

It’s imperative to take all safety measures to ensure you don’t lose your dog at any time. For this particular holiday, though, it is almost always best to just put your pup inside where they’re safe. You might even consider placing them inside a nice, secure crate for the few hours that fireworks will be at their loudest. Ensure your dog has whatever they need to feel comforted — whether it’s a thunder jacket, vet-approved supplements to reduce anxiety, or their favorite toy.

How you can update your dog’s identification

(Photo Credit: Tracey Buyce Photography | Getty Images)

Check your dog’s current tags and make sure all the information is still correct. If your address or phone number has changed, it’s time to replace them. The same applies if the tag is worn and unreadable.

You can buy custom tags online or at almost any local pet supply store. It’s worth the few bucks to ensure you and your best friend can live a full life together.

If your pets aren’t microchipped, do it now. Microchips are fairly cheap and can be put in place by the local animal shelter or your vet’s office.

Microchips are great because your dog can’t slip out of a microchip by accident. It goes wherever they go. Moreover, almost any vet, shelter, or police department can trace it back to you.

In the event your dog does go missing, make sure to have a high-resolution, clear, recent photograph of your pup. That way, you’ll have something to post on social media and on lost dog fliers.

The importance of updated dog ID tags

It’s better to be prepared than to learn a lesson the hard way. Or, even worse, to suffer heartbreak and regret for not taking a few simple steps to keep your dog safe on this patriotic holiday.

Increased risk of escape

July 4th is full of fireworks displays, which can be extremely loud and startling for dogs. The loud noises and bright lights can cause anxiety and fear in dogs, leading them to panic and prompting an attempt to escape. Dogs may try to jump fences, break free from leashes, or find any means to run away from the perceived danger. Updated tags with accurate contact information are crucial in case your dog does manage to make a run for it. Accurate tags increase the chances of reuniting with your furry friend if someone finds them roaming about.

Higher likelihood of lost and missing dogs

The Fourth of July holiday often involves gatherings, parties, and outdoor events where people may have their pets present. With an increased number of people and distractions, it’s easier for dogs to become disoriented or get lost. If your dog is wearing updated identification tags, it provides a quick way for someone who finds them to contact you and return your pet safely.

Difficulty in locating lost pups

In the event that your dog does go missing, it’s important to take immediate action to find them. However, searching for a lost dog can be a challenging task, especially during a holiday. Updated tags that include your current phone number and address can help facilitate the process of locating your dog, as does a microchip with current contact information on file.

Have a safe holiday

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

If the holiday has you feeling extra patriotic, take a few moments to learn the names of the star-spangled pups who’ve called the White House home throughout American history. We think they’ve held a presidentially important role — providing snuggles and love to our nation’s leaders.

The German Shepherd is described as a breed that has an “eagerness to have a purpose.” This is why they make such amazing working dogs and take on jobs such as police work, search and rescue, and military roles. German Shepherd Dogs also make incredible service animals for people with disabilities.

Part of your German Shepherd puppy’s purpose will be to please you and make sure you’re safe. They tend to be one-family pets, meaning they can be suspicious of strangers. As such, early socialization is important for this breed to ensure they mind their manners around other humans and dogs.

Do you have a hardwood floor? That will transform into a nice carpet with the German Shepherd’s notorious shedding coat.

Although absolutely gorgeous, Shepherds are shedders to the max. Prepare for a snow globe of hair to poof off your pup any time you give them a big snuggle, which will be more often than not. As such, you’ll need to invest in regular grooming for your pup. You’ll also need to be ready to remove hair from your furniture and bedding, especially if your German Shepherd Dog sleeps with you.

The German Shepherd is a very active breed and needs lots of physical stimulation and playtime. As such, consider making long walks interesting to keep your puppy fit — physically and mentally.

When you first get your puppy, playing may consist of nipping due to their herding background. When your GSD is fully grown, they may love to wrestle around and forget how big they are. If you’re an active person with thick skin, a German Shepherd puppy may be right for you.

Despite their intimidating looks, German Shepherds can be total softies, especially if socialized early on. These pups are always up for snuggling with others, including kids and other pets.
If you want a German Shepherd puppy in your life, you have to really want your dog to be a part of every little bit of your daily routine. Morning showers? Your pup will want to sit right outside to make sure you rinse off the soap. Your bed? That’s for both of you, right?

Highly intelligent and curious, Shepherds want to know what is going on all of the time. German Shepherds will attach at the hip and make the right person the happiest dog parent on the planet. Lucky for you, that starts from the time they are puppies.

If you’d rather catch the next high than chase your overly energetic herding dog around the backyard, this list of the laziest dog breeds is perfect for you. Netflix and chill with a couch potato pup is probably more your speed, and there’s nothing wrong with that. So, if you’re a stoner who wants to cozy up with one of the calmest, low-energy dogs, we’ve got you covered. Let the binge-watching and potato chip eating begin!

Are there lazy dogs who prefer lounging on the couch?

In truth, no dog breed is inherently “lazy” by nature. Although this may be true, some of the canines perceived as the laziest dog breeds are just low-energy pups. It’s important to remember all dogs require constant care, supervision, an investment in training, and parents who are willing to take on the responsibility of dog ownership. Moreover, all dogs need exercise. That said, some breeds just need less of it than others.

The list of the calmest, laziest dog breeds

With adult marijuana use increasingly becoming legalized, more people than ever before are getting baked. In the process, police K-9s are being put out of work. By the same token, a stoner’s mellow lifestyle necessitates a laidback dog who won’t kill their buzz. Given that, here’s our list of the laziest dog breeds we’d recommend to any weed lover looking for the perfect pup.

The English Bulldog definitely isn’t naughty by nature, but he is brachycephalic. By virtue of having a short muzzle, Bulldogs often suffer from more respiratory issues. While they need to occasionally get out of their dog bed to burn off some pounds and counteract their risk of obesity, they love snoozing the day away. Summer heat and vigorous exercise are rough on this dog breed. As such, they’ll be perfectly comfortable lounging at home with a stoner parent.

French Bulldog

Similar to the Bulldog, Frenchies are at a disadvantage when it comes to panting to cool down in the summer heat because of their shorter snouts. No bother, French Bulldogs are perfectly happy by your side or traveling in a stylish carrier under your arms. Perhaps that’s why these pups are now one of the most popular breeds in America.

So, whether you’re a celebrity living in the Hollywood Hills or someone with a bit more modest apartment, Frencies are compact enough to be content in even the smallest of abodes. In fact, French Bulldogs grew in numbers after English lacemakers moved their canine companions with them to reside in smaller living quarters in France.

Shih Tzu

Another lap warmer, the Shih Tzu is a compact dog breed bred for companionship. These dogs have a royal history originating in China, much like the Pekingese. Accordingly, these dogs would rather occupy a spot on the couch than one in an agility competition. That’s not to say they aren’t graceful and capable of such athletic fetes, because they are. However, minimal exercise and playtime will keep them fit.

With all the hours spent indoors, though, you’ll need to remember to regularly brush and groom their long double coat. Do yourself and them a favor by preventing painful matting and tangles. Good thing for stoners, it’s easy to comb a Shih Tzu’s flowing locks while you watch TV together.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

(Photo Credit: Banepx | Getty Images)

If you’re a stoner who likes to snooze on the sofa while basking in the warm glow of a sunbeam, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the low-energy dog breed for you. Needing around half an hour of exercise daily, this popular toy breed was born to be a companion dog. In fact, Cavaliers also boast a royal history and were often seen on the laps of leaders occupying the throne. What’s more, these pups grow very attached to their humans. Cavaliers prefer spending every waking moment by their person’s side — even if it means staying in for the night … or a lazy Sunday.

Chow Chow

Similar to many of the chillest dog breeds on our list, the Chow Chow also originated in China. A medium-sized dog weighing between 40 and 70 pounds, this floof looks like they are imitating a bear or cuddly lion with their signature mane. Their thick fur makes them prone to overheating in the warmer months. So, moderate exercise is all they need to stay happy and healthy. That likely puts this dog in the pro column if you’re a 420 aficionado. Plus, we imagine it’ll be totally wicked to look at your Chow Chow’s distinctive blue-black tongue when you’re high as a kite!

Basset Hound

(Photo Credit: Cavan Images | Getty Images)

Last but not least, the low-maintenance Basset Hound ranks high when it comes to the lowest energy, laziest dog breeds. These pups are surprisingly laid back despite originally being bred for hunting. While they are still Hounds — meaning they have both a great sense of smell and a stubborn streak — they’re restful dogs with calm temperaments.

With distinctive droopy faces, stubby legs, and heavy-boned bodies, these medium to large-sized dogs need enough exercise to stave off obesity. That said, stoners can rest easy knowing this pup isn’t in a hurry to go anywhere. In fact, Basset Hounds are even known for being a bit sluggish indoors.

A blunt warning for stoner pet parents

Choosing a pup from the list of the laziest dog breeds may seem ideal for a stoner pet parent. However, being a responsible dog owner means that no matter your love for plant medicine, you’re always putting your pup first.

All dog parents should ensure their furry friends get adequate exercise, enough playtime, and mental stimulation regularly. To keep pets healthy and happy, dogs need a nutritious diet and easy access to clean water. Just like adults, dogs can experience anxiety. So, they fare better when they know their needs are always going to be met.

If you’re willing and able to provide your pet with low-impact activity during the hours you’re not zoned out, the adoption of a dog is one of the best choices you’ll ever make. The rest of the time, be sure to give your calm pup plenty of affection and attention. Under those circumstances, your canine couch potato will be perfectly content in your chill, stoner home.

Most importantly, never let your dog partake when you take a toke. Marijuana toxicity can be deadly for dogs, and ingesting even a small amount of THC can land you at the emergency vet. Put bluntly, responsible cannabis use means keeping any and all marijuana products out of reach of your pets.

Dear DogTime Readers and Friends —

There’s a popular proverb we’ve all heard that now goes, “Every dog has its day.” Of course, I prefer “their” over “its,” because I’m of the belief that dogs have souls and, as living creatures, deserve to be treated as more than mere objects. In light of this, I’ll continue to opt for, “Every dog has their day.”

Idiomatically, the expression is one meant to encourage and persuade us to keep going even when we’re down. Eventually, we’ll prevail, thanks to a healthy dose of both good luck and determination. At which point, we’ll have our moment in the sun and the chance to shine.

Good ole sharp-witted Shakespeare helped popularize the expression with his inclusion of the famed words in “Hamlet.” However, the turn of phrase has a storied history reaching deep into the past to its initial documented use in the first century in Ancient Greece. At that time, Plutarch wrote, “Even a dog gets his revenge,” in an attempt to describe the death of famous playwright Euripides, who was killed by canines. The more gruesome version eventually became, “A dogge hath a day,” courtesy of Richard Taverner in 1539. More than a century later, the expression morphed into, “Every dog hath his day,” at the hand of John Ray. Ever since, it’s appeared in both notable texts and common speech alike.

That’s how easy it is for an idea to be embraced and become part of popular culture. In fact, I’m sure many of us did not even realize where the phrasing came from, even if we, ourselves, have been heard espousing the proverb.

Now, hold that thought. I promise I’ll get back to it.

Some dogs, unfortunately, have been having more than their fair share of ‘ruff’ days …

Recently, we posted an article highlighting the similarities and differences between two breeds: the Cane Corso and the Presa Canario. Undeniably, both these breeds, like others we seek to inform our readers about — including but not at all limited to Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, the Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiros, the Japanese Tosa, and American Bully dogs — are often in the headlines. And when they are making the news, it’s typically not because it’s a feel-good, public-interest story that leaves you with warm fuzzies.

Now, why am I giving you all this backstory? Well, on the corresponding social media post about our recent informational piece, we received a comment that pained me. While the words hurt, I think the larger sentiment about how we — collectively — look at and talk about select breeds is what struck me. There’s so much misunderstanding when it comes to certain dogs.

Personally, I hate that because dogs are just the absolute best, purest souls. They make our lives richer and more rewarding. Loving them is a gift, second only to receiving their unconditional love. And, anyone who has rescued a dog knows that — in truth — it’s really always been the dogs who have rescued us.

To the point, the commenter on our Facebook post about the Cane Corso and Presa Canario wrote, “These dogs are, to me, like having an automatic tactical weapon; I don’t need this level of protection. And I don’t want one in my neighborhood.”

Le sigh.

Changing the narrative on ‘aggressive’ and ‘dangerous’ dogs

After taking the deepest breaths, in a sincere attempt to combat any deeply-held beliefs about these particular breeds, I did my best to respond thoughtfully. Who am I to know where this commenter is coming from? Perhaps they personally had a bad experience with a Cane Corso or Perro de Presa Canario. (As an aside, I recently learned the plural of “Cane Corso” is “Cani Corsi.” So, there’s that.) Whatever the case, I just don’t know, and I’d rather not make assumptions to the contrary.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2119" height="1414" src="https://dogtime.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2024/03/GettyImages-1490277861.jpg?w=1024" alt="Close up portrait of beautiful Cane Corso taken on sunset during regular walk.
However, I see my duty here at DogTime as one to stand up for our canine companions and use the power of publishing for good. As such, I began typing my reply. What flowed from my brain to my keyboard was as follows:

“While I understand why you may harbor reservations and respect that those are your personal feelings, it’s important to remember that no dog is born aggressive or “bad.” Typically, any perceived behavioral issues stem from unmet needs, lack of proper socialization, or poor / no training. Unfortunately, mass media outlets often go out of their way to sensationalize and add to a negative narrative about some breeds. As news becomes more about entertainment and cheap, quick clicks, this has only gotten worse. This, coupled with often biased and unsubstantiated breed bans, can exacerbate negative stereotypes about certain dogs, which then become pervasive in our culture. Over time, it’s harder and harder to dispel myths about certain dogs.”

Continuing, I added, “Despite this, we at DogTime think it’s imperative to provide useful, accurate, factual, and timely information about all dogs in order to help our furry friends and the people who love, interact with, rescue, help, treat, or even want to better understand them.”

Every dog deserves to have their day

I can assure those of you who visit our site that we’re going to continue to do just what I shared with the commenter. You see, information is power. As far as I’m concerned, we’re here to use it wisely. And, even if the other guys choose not to, we’re going to stay in our lane. For that reason, we’re steadfast in our commitment to keep doing what we’ve always done to stand up for our furry friends who can’t speak for themselves. Although, we truly wish they could because that would just be the coolest! Moreover, we’re going to keep doing this until every dog has their day. Unquestionably, every dog deserves to have their day.

Annually, over three million dogs end up in shelters in America alone. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, their numbers have only grown. Every day, people surrender perfectly kind canines because of their inability — sometimes by no fault of their own — or unwillingness to put in the hard work of caring for these dogs. Once in the shelter, certain breeds deemed as “dangerous” or “aggressive” often face insurmountable challenges in finding forever homes. Put differently, these dogs have a hard enough time getting adopted without those of us self-proclaimed animal lovers doing the absolute most to spread misinformation about their temperament and personalities.

In any case, it’s up to you all if you’re going to stand with us and, in so doing, stand for our four-legged pals.

Don’t roll over

By all means, I know there is a lot of noise out there. I also know you have a myriad of choices as to how to spend your limited time in this busy world. Given that, I appreciate any of it you choose to spend reading the content we work so hard to put out there for you. What’s more, I’m grateful if you’ve made it this far in what is my first letter from the editor because I’m probably just preaching to the choir at this point.

In summary, we all play a role in advocating for our pets. How we talk about dogs matters. You see, people are always listening. So, if you take nothing else away from this message, please consider the value of perpetuating commonly-held stereotypes about certain pups. Reflect on how you discuss these dogs and whether you take stock of negative media stories that play on those beliefs. Scrutinize how you interact with those stories online. Giving traffic, time, and shares to pieces like those only means more articles with the same outdated and often misleading, misinformed reporting will continue to be published. It’s my sincere hope you’ll help us change that.

Even better, the products are easy to clean.

Do dogs actually like FunnyFuzzy products?

The short answer is yes, dogs enthusiastically choose FunnyFuzzy dog products.

How do I know? Well, I’m a proud millennial dog mom to two senior rescue pups. While it’s not my whole personality, I’ll admit it’s a pretty outsized part of it. That said, I’ve spent an embarrassing percentage of my disposable income on my dogs. Some products fail to pass muster, but that’s not the case with offerings from FunnyFuzzy.

In fact, both my Schnoodle and Terrier mix are often spotted taking naps in their favorite FunnyFuzzy dog products. In truth, I’d spend all day in one of those beds too if I wanted to splurge on FunnyFuzzy’s human-sized dog bed … and I still might.

FunnyFuzzy’s dog car seats and travel carrier products

Hit the road often? If so, you should invest in your pup’s safety.
Having older dogs, my top pick is the waterproof Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed. It comfortably fits both my tiny dogs, possessing three seatbelts and a plush cushion. With a nonstick bottom, it stays in place even if the terrain is a bit bumpy. Even so, the unmatched safety features include multiple options for securing the dog car seat. This is ideal whether you can place it in the backseat or need to utilize the cargo and trunk area. It’s heavy-duty and can double as a dog bed. What’s more, it has a 360-degree-unobstructed view allowing increased airflow and ventilation for your pet. It’s a dog bed worth the splurge and will undoubtedly last for a long time, allowing countless miles of memorable vacations to be shared with you and your best buds.

FunnyFuzzy’s best product option for traveling with smaller dogs

I love the preppy look and lightweight feel of FunnyFuzzy’s Dog Car Seat Bed – First Class in blue stripe. While the standard comes in viscose fabric — and I’m somewhat concerned it may stain if there are any unfortunate accidents — it does boast double-sided, pillowy fabric, which my dog Goldie seems to love. Gratefully, if need be, the cover can come off and be thrown in the wash. This is a sigh of relief if your dog is one of the breeds prone to motion sickness.

This line of dog car seats comes with both one- and two-seat options, as well as some waterproof fabric designs. In comparison to the larger travel bolster dog car seat bed, this product seems better suited for smaller pups. As such, one of my favorite features is that you can keep your dog seatbelted and carry them from the car to the house in this FunnyFuzzy dog product. My only wish was that the arm straps were padded for carrying convenience. Additional support would reinforce the weight of the dogs when the carrier is being used to physically transport pets.

Without a doubt, if you’re traveling for a weekend, this dog car seat is ideal. The product is relatively compact and can double as a bed at your short-term lodgings. For dogs who are anxious travelers, this can add a degree of familiarity and comfort when they’re away from home.

FunnyFuzzy’s dog beds epitomize artful canine comfort

FunnyFuzzy’s dog products check all of the boxes.

When choosing a dog bed, top of mind is likely the size of your breed and how your pup will fit in their new resting spot. Next, you prioritize comfort — from plush padding to thick foam features — and support. This is especially true in the case of dogs needing orthopedic options.

If you’re a practical shopper, you’ll want to ensure the dog bed is made from high-quality, durable, tear-proof materials. Reinforced, covered zippers are a plus. Being able to easily wipe down the surface or deconstruct it to throw in the wash is a crucial feature. Not to mention, fuss-free reassembly is the dream.

While dogs are not able to see every color of the rainbow, we know not everything is blue, yellow, or shades of grey. As such, consumers often have style, color palette, pattern, and design preferences when it comes to matching their home’s interior aesthetics. Whereas many dog products of the past seemingly did not prioritize coming in a range of colors and designs, FunnyFuzzy corners the market in this area.

Docusate sodium is a laxative that can treat constipation in dogs. It’s the generic name of a medicine that’s also sold under the brand name Colace. The medication works by softening the canine’s stools, which makes them easier to pass.

It comes in a range of forms, including tablets, capsules, and liquids. While you don’t need a veterinarian’s prescription to purchase it, you must consult with your vet before adding it to your dog’s routine. Closely follow your vet’s instructions for the correct and safe dosage, as well as frequency.

Here’s what you should know about the uses, dosage, and side effects of docusate sodium for dogs.

Uses of docusate sodium for dogs

Veterinarians normally recommend docusate sodium to treat constipation in dogs. Vets may also prescribe the stool softener before certain surgical procedures or examinations.

The drug is a stimulant laxative, stimulating the bowels and softening the animal’s stools.

Dosage of docusate sodium for dogs

(Photo Credit: Martinns | Getty Images)

The following is a guideline for typical use of the drug in dogs and must not replace your veterinarian’s advice for your individual pet.

Your vet will advise a dosage of docusate sodium or Colace for your dog that reflects the severity of the constipation, as well as the size and weight, of your pet. You must consult your vet before giving this drug to your dog.

Generally, veterinarians advise a dosage of 25 to 50 mg for small dogs, 50 to 100 mg for medium dogs, and 100 to 200 mg for large dogs. Dogs may take these doses once to twice per day, usually on an empty stomach.

It’s important to always follow your vet’s dosage and administration instructions exactly. This includes the length of time you should give the medicine to your dog.

Side effects of docusate sodium for dogs

Side effects of giving docusate sodium or Colace to a dog are said to be uncommon. That said, if you notice signs of an allergic reaction when your dog takes any kind of medicine — including swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing — make sure to contact your veterinarian immediately.

If you suspect your dog took too much of the medication and might be suffering from an overdose, then you must contact your vet or an emergency vet right away.

All-around funny man Jon Stewart broke character on the Feb. 26 episode of “The Daily Show” to share the news of his family dog’s passing. A longtime animal activist, Stewart and his family are heartbroken over the death of the three-legged dog they rescued “12 or 13 years ago,” according to Today. The brindle Pit Bull, named “Dipper,” was also a regular fixture on the set of Comedy Central’s noted late-night show.

Jon Stewart pays tribute to Dipper, his Pit Bull

Jon Stewart is known for his political commentary on-screen and activism for America’s veterans off-screen. Returning to host Monday-night episodes of “The Daily Show,” audiences expected more of the same from the seasoned comedian and pundit. However, the mood shifted as Stewart memorialized his late Pit Bull this week.

Explaining how the dog came into his life, Stewart shared how — more than a decade ago — his kids wanted to raise money for a local New York animal shelter. As such, his children sold cupcakes at a table outside the location.

Tearing up, Stewart recalled the day. He said, “As a little extra incentive, they brought out this 1-ish-year-old brindle pit bull who got hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg.”

After the Pit Bull pup was plopped on Stewart’s lap, it was game over. The family spent the day assisting the shelter and left after adopting a new pet.

“We called him Dipper,” Stewart said. Adding, “And in a world of good boys, he was the best.”

Pet dog Dipper was a regular on ‘Daily Show’ set

Jon Stewart remembers his best boy, Dipper. pic.twitter.com/S8p4nuOFZ5
— The Daily Show (@TheDailyShow) February 27, 2024

What’s more, Stewart recounted how the dog would join him every day on set. Calling him “part of the OG ‘Daily Show’ dog crew,” Stewart fondly remembered their time together.

Choking back tears, Stewart shared more memories of his late dog — highlighting Dipper’s spirit. Specifically, the rescue pup “met actors and authors and presidents and kings.” Stewart even made a joke, adding Dipper “did what the Taliban could not do, which is put a scare into Malala Yousafzai.”

Somberly, Stewart revealed, “Dipper passed away yesterday.” The host continued, saying, “He was ready. He was tired, but I wasn’t. And the family, we were all together. Thank goodness. We were all with him.” Emphatically, Stewart added, “But, boy, my wish for you is one day you find that dog, that one dog, that just is the best.”

According to People, along with his wife Tracey — a vegan and former veterinary technician — Jon Stewart established an animal sanctuary in New Jersey. The couple set up the farm after Stewart left his first hosting role on “The Daily Show” years ago. What’s more, in a 2015 interview with NPR, Tracey confirmed the family lives in a real-life animal house. At that time, she said the “household includes four dogs, four pigs, three rabbits, two guinea pigs, one parrot, one hamster and two fish (as well as three horses, though they live off-site).” While some things may have changed since then, the family’s love of animals has not.

In the same interview, Terry Gross asked Tracey for her advice when it comes to rescuing dogs. Tracey replied, “Look, this is going to be a transition. There’s going to be hiccups.” She added, “Especially when you first are bringing a dog home from a shelter, there’s going to be a week of adjustment.” Unfortunately, some people give up and return dogs to shelters before the animals have adequate time to adjust.

Notably, Tracey reminded those bringing home a rescue that “when you’re getting a dog … it’s going to be your responsibility.” So, you need “to be consistent, to find answers and to stick it out.” The interview ended after Tracey shared, “I do always feel like it’s never the dog, it’s always our not knowing enough.”

If you’re on the fence about purchasing a dog car seat, don’t be. For many of us, it may feel like a splurge, but can we really put a price on the comfort and safety of our fuzzy friends? Frankly, I wish I had invested in one sooner. After just a few weeks with the FunnyFuzzy Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed, I’m a proud canine car seat crusader.

FunnyFuzzy Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed, in pink waterproof fabric.

Full disclosure: I’m a work-from-home dog mom. And, like any loving pet parent, I would do anything to spend more time with my dogs. In my case, that included pursuing a career that would allow me to do just that.

My two pups are senior rescues. We’re not exactly sure of their ages, but both Washington and Goldie Hawn are incredibly resilient, very snuggly — in their own ways — and full of spirit and heart. One is a miniature Schnoodle; the other is a petite Terrier mix with the coloration of a Golden Retriever. Both are under 20 pounds. Most excitedly for me, they are just as happy to spend time with me as I am with them. Given that, I like to put them in the car and go on adventures together. However, I’m always worried they are in danger or uncomfortable during the journey.

How FunnyFuzzy products are different from — and better than — other dog car seat travel options on the market

Over the last couple of years, I’ve tried various means of transporting my canines.

At first, I tried attaching a collar to a leash with a seatbelt built-in, but I quickly changed tack when I learned of the associated safety shortfalls of that method. Next, I purchased good-fitting harnesses for the pups and dog car seatbelts. The two would ride in the backseat, usually lying on some blankets, but that only protects your car seats to a certain degree and offers little in terms of comfort. So, I then upgraded to one of those washable seat covers. It draped over the back headrests, as well as the front ones, creating what looks like a hammock. While I was able to store things on the floormats below the overhanging fabric, the product’s design took up a lot of room, rendered most of my back seat area unusable for fellow human passengers, and was a bit unsightly.

I always thought it’d be nice not to have to choose who gets to be more comfortable and safe while also being high-quality and functional. Thankfully, FunnyFuzzy has solved this dilemma.

FunnyFuzzy products prioritize comfort, design quality, and dog safety

Thanks to FunnyFuzzy’s prioritization of comfort and design quality, my pups are now riding in luxe accommodations — all while giving me crucial peace of mind in regard to their safety.

Functionally, the Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed only takes up two of my back seats, leaving room for a happy passenger. Moreover, it can also safely go in the cargo area and attach to the back headrests if you have an SUV or hatchback. While I prefer to see my little ones when traveling together, it’s still a great feature for large families who need an “all-aboard” option. And, as a plus for you, most of the behind-the-seat and floor space in the foot area remains open and usable with this design, too.

Even better, this dog car seat doubles as a dog bed, providing mobile comfort to furry friends on long road trips or even just at home. I witnessed the magic of this firsthand after leaving the FunnyFuzzy dog car seat out for a few days in my home. My dogs began choosing it for a snooze over their dog beds!

Moreover, the design gives your dog a 360-degree unobstructed view, allowing them to enjoy the journey with you. The open design concept permits air to circulate and keeps your pups from getting too hot or cold, as airflow can actually reach them. This is especially true if your vehicle, like mine, only has front air vents.

There are a lot of design and product features to put in the pro column with FunnyFuzzy’s Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed. Here are a few favs:

FunnyFuzzy Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed in Waterproof Pro-Charcoal Grey.

Easy Care: Waterproof Design

Most notably, the waterproof aspect of this dog car seat is my favorite feature. This is ideal when you adopt senior or rescue dogs. Accidents can happen with any pup, but their likelihood and frequency often increase as our pets age or are undergoing training. Therefore, the removable, machine-washable cover is a win in my book.

Safety First: Multiple Harnesses

There are three harnesses, making this choice great if you have multiple dogs. The adjustable clips easily fasten to a dog’s leash or harness. Moreover, this feature ensures the car seat will mitigate or prevent injury if I slam on the brakes or end up in an accident. In the latter case, it also means my dogs won’t flee the vehicle at the scene — potentially getting lost or putting them at risk of being run over.

The design also features a non-skid bottom grip fabric, preventing the car seat from moving around during transit. What’s more, there are multiple ways to fasten the dog car seat bed to my back seat. I can use the straps to secure the bed around both back headrests or seat belt the bed into the backseat.

Size and Weight

The car seat works for medium or large dogs. It comes in Standard and X-large sizes, and my two small pups have plenty of room to sprawl comfortably (and adorably) in the smaller option. Also, the weight is beautifully balanced; it’s a quality product that feels heavy-duty but it’s virtually weightless. This makes transporting it from your home to your car or between vehicles easy. If you have mobility or accessibility issues, this is a standout benefit of the design.

FunnyFuzzy knows all dogs are different, as are all pet lovers. The product comes in a variety of fun color options, including my favorite — olive green — as well as light green, pink, blue, grey, charcoal, yellow, brown, and velvet brown.

It’s offered in either a plush, standard viscose fiber, or a waterproof Oxford fabric. Either way, the fabric appears durable and high quality. The leather logo patch even adds a chic detail. As a fun feature, the design also features a side pocket. I found this convenient for storing my dogs’ leashes while they were hooked into the harness straps.

It was also pretty easy to assemble the car seat bed. However, I wish the individual pillow inserts were labeled to better differentiate between the side/arm pillows and the ones for the back. Minus that minor frustration and a desire for the bottom padded pillow to be a bit thicker, I still rate the overall design positively.

The simple answer here is yes. You absolutely should invest in your dog’s comfort and safety if they regularly ride in the car. While the price point may seem like a splurge for this option, coming in anywhere from $298 to just under $400 — depending on the option and size you need — it appears FunnyFuzzy regularly runs promotions on their site. Even without a sale sticker, though, the FunnyFuzzy Travel Bolster Safety Medium Large Dog Car Back Seat Bed is an investment that’s worth making.
Roses are red. Violets are blue. You better not give your Valentine unsafe flowers that could endanger a dog or two.

If you want to show your sweetheart you care, truly, then you’ll be mindful of which bouquet you reach for this Valentine’s Day. While some flowers are non-toxic and even dog-safe, many are not. Could you imagine your pup or your significant other’s furry friend ending up at the emergency vet after chowing down on your heartfelt gift? Admittedly, it’d be pretty hard to recover from that ultimate dating fail.

So, there’s no better way to win over the heart of someone than by showing them you love their dogs just as much as you do them. That’s why we’ve compiled the top list of the best dog-safe Valentine’s Day flowers. If you ask us, we believe taking care of a loved one’s pets is perhaps the most romantic gesture of all.

Potential Valentine’s Day dangers to your pet

Valentine’s Day should be spent celebrating love … or even like or, perhaps, lust — not stressing over outlandish bills courtesy of avoidable trips to the emergency vet. Unfortunately, Cupid’s day to shine presents a number of dangers to our dogs, including chocolate poisoning. If you’re really unlucky in love, your pup may even suffer from strangulation on certain unmentionables. And, don’t forget to find an alternative way to set the mood than with open flames from candles. On top of that, be mindful of where you leave your wine glass and ensure alcohol is out of your dog’s reach.

Which Valentine’s Day flowers are safe for dogs?

Simply put, it’s best to just nip any potential dangers in the bud. Thankfully, you can do just that by buying the safest Valentine’s Day flower buds on the market.

Sunflowers

There are few flowers as symbolic, cheerful, and bright as sunflowers. Why not show your crush just how happy they make you by giving them a flower that truly brightens up any space? Also, a fun fact, sunflower seeds are safe for your dog to eat. Perhaps you’ll even consider planting a few of the towering blooms in your summer garden so both your beau and your dog can enjoy all this plant has to offer year-round.

Orchids

Orchids are low-maintenance even if the love of your life is anything but that. You can give them orchids potted or in a beautiful vase, which is a thoughtful bonus gift for any plant lover in your life. As such, they are a sophisticated and classic choice when it comes to dog-safe Valentine’s Day flowers to consider this season.

Gerbera daisies

Easy to find and hard not to like, these daisies are safe for dogs. Colloquially known as “Gerber daisies,” you can put together quite a colorful bouquet for that special someone. As a bonus, these blooms are non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Violas or violets

Violas, not to be confused with the stringed instrument, are also dog-safe Valentine’s Day flowers. Technically a part of the violet family, Violaceae, violas are non-toxic for dogs. This is true even if they take a little nibble on the flowers. That said, dogs can eat the blooms raw, so long as they haven’t been treated with pesticides or other toxic chemicals. In particular, African violets are incredibly popular and easy to find at any nearby garden shop.

Pansies

Pansies can also be eaten by dogs without worrying about incurring any adverse effects. Surprisingly, many dogs reportedly find them to be quite the treat, as well. Non-toxic, edible, colorful, and honestly delightful, pansies are another dog-safe flower for your delicious snack of a date.

Petunias

Arguably, this dog-safe Valentine’s Day flower goes on our list of pretty adorable puppy names. While these fragrant nightshades won’t hurt your pooch if they take a little taste, humans should avoid consuming them at all costs.

Roses

Tried and true, roses are perhaps considered the most romantic and iconic of the safest Valentine’s Day flowers for your dog … and your sweetheart. While you should be mindful of the sharp thorns and avoid ingestion of them by your canine, this mainstay of the holiday is a-okay in our books. Thankfully, most commercial florists de-thorn the stems so you don’t accidentally prick your person or your pup.

(Photo Credit: Liliya Kulianionak | Getty Images)

Snapdragons

Okay, this flower is just downright fun to say. Charming, bright, and ready to add a little height and dimension to any floral arrangement, snapdragons are thankfully non-toxic to pets. As such, these make a great addition to any bouquet or will be a lovely feast for the eyes all on their own.

Marigolds

Marigold would also make a great pet name. And, in addition to being a dog-safe Valentine’s Day option, this flower is the highlight of pet-safe ofrendas during Day of the Dead celebrations. Every fall, Día de los Muertos commemorates loved ones who have passed on in the hope their souls will return home for the night. As such, marigolds are sometimes considered to be “flowers of the dead.” That said, the holiday is more celebratory than somber. So, despite what your Valentine may interpret as a potentially troubling connotation, these orange-hued petals still rank high in our hearts.

Freesia

While less common in some grocery store flower coolers, you can find this dog-safe Valentine’s bloom at your local florist. Typically these flowers are used in addition to the star blooms in bouquets, but they are generally considered pet-safe. However, they may cause minor gastric discomfort if your dog makes a meal of them.

Zinnias

Symbolic of lasting affection, zinnias are an ideal choice for the person you’re hoping to shower with love this holiday. They are colorful, in addition to being non-toxic to pups, and require very little maintenance. Moreover, they also top our choices for great Mother’s Day flowers since they are often more readily found during the hotter months of the year. Don’t worry, you can still find them in February if your heart is set on sending the petals of this pick.

Untraditional plant picks for your person and their pets

If you are someone who tends to go against the grain or prefers to deviate from the norm, there are a number of pet-safe house plants. Even better, many of these dog-friendly plants tend to outlast the short-lived blooms of popular Valentine’s Day picks. Consider a ponytail palm, Venus fly trap, or spider plant to say “I love you” this February 14th. To this end, may your relationship last even longer than the love fern in our favorite rom-com.

What we don’t love? The flowers that are extremely toxic to our furry friends. Avoid lilies this Valentine’s Day, since most varieties are poisonous to our cats and dogs. Lavender, which contains the compound linalool, is also unsafe for our canine companions. The list of dangerous petals doesn’t end there though.

Other popular but poisonous plants include azaleas, baby’s breath, begonias, chrysanthemums, daffodils, dahlias, and Easter lilies. Similarly, hydrangeas, irises, peace lilies, rhododendrons, and tulips are toxic or dangerous to dogs.

If your pet may have ingested or come into contact with any of the toxic flowers above, immediately contact your vet. Alternatively, if an accident happens after normal operating hours, take your pup to the nearest emergency animal hospital. Moreover, if your dog is showing signs of serious illness, don’t hesitate to call the Pet Poison Helpline by phone at 855-764-7661 for guidance on what to do next.

For those who wish to avoid any potential Valentine’s Day dangers and altogether skip the flowers, there are other safe gift-giving options on the table.
