Sadly, the fire resulted in severe injuries to Coleman, and claimed the life of his beloved family dog, Hammer. Coleman is currently hospitalized in Ohio, battling for his life due to injuries sustained in the fire.

As per TMZ Sports, Coleman tried to save the family pet, Hammer, and risked his own life in doing so. However, the dog tragically died in the fire. 

According to his daughter, Morgan, the 59-year-old Coleman was visiting his parents at his childhood home. The family dog, a Rottweiler called Hammer, awakened Coleman as the fire spread through the house. 

Subsequently, Mark quickly sprang into action, escorting his parents to safety without harm. Despite the danger, Coleman bravely rushed back into the burning house to rescue his dog, putting his own life at risk. 

Unfortunately, despite Coleman’s efforts, Hammer didn’t survive. In addition, the entire home burned down. 

Morgan has confirmed that he was airlifted to a nearby hospital. There, he is currently receiving continuous around-the-clock treatment.

All-around funny man Jon Stewart broke character on the Feb. 26 episode of “The Daily Show” to share the news of his family dog’s passing. A longtime animal activist, Stewart and his family are heartbroken over the death of the three-legged dog they rescued “12 or 13 years ago,” according to Today. The brindle Pit Bull, named “Dipper,” was also a regular fixture on the set of Comedy Central’s noted late-night show.

Returning to host Monday-night episodes of “The Daily Show,” audiences expected more of the same from the seasoned comedian and pundit. However, the mood shifted as Stewart memorialized his late Pit Bull this week.

Explaining how the dog came into his life, Stewart shared how — more than a decade ago — his kids wanted to raise money for a local New York animal shelter. As such, his children sold cupcakes at a table outside the location.

Tearing up, Stewart recalled the day. He said, “As a little extra incentive, they brought out this 1-ish-year-old brindle pit bull who got hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg.”

After the Pit Bull pup was plopped on Stewart’s lap, it was game over. The family spent the day assisting the shelter and left after adopting a new pet.

“We called him Dipper,” Stewart said. Adding, “And in a world of good boys, he was the best.”

Somberly, Stewart revealed, “Dipper passed away yesterday.” The host continued, saying, “He was ready. He was tired, but I wasn’t. And the family, we were all together. Thank goodness. We were all with him.” Emphatically, Stewart added, “But, boy, my wish for you is one day you find that dog, that one dog, that just is the best.”

According to People, along with his wife Tracey — a vegan and former veterinary technician — Jon Stewart established an animal sanctuary in New Jersey. The couple set up the farm after Stewart left his first hosting role on “The Daily Show” years ago. What’s more, in a 2015 interview with NPR, Tracey confirmed the family lives in a real-life animal house. At that time, she said the “household includes four dogs, four pigs, three rabbits, two guinea pigs, one parrot, one hamster and two fish (as well as three horses, though they live off-site).” While some things may have changed since then, the family’s love of animals has not.

In the same interview, Terry Gross asked Tracey for her advice when it comes to rescuing dogs. Tracey replied, “Look, this is going to be a transition. There’s going to be hiccups.” She added, “Especially when you first are bringing a dog home from a shelter, there’s going to be a week of adjustment.” Unfortunately, some people give up and return dogs to shelters before the animals have adequate time to adjust.

Notably, Tracey reminded those bringing home a rescue that “when you’re getting a dog … it’s going to be your responsibility.” So, you need “to be consistent, to find answers and to stick it out.” The interview ended after Tracey shared, “I do always feel like it’s never the dog, it’s always our not knowing enough.”

Authorities earlier this week arrested and charged 14 men from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama in connection with a large-scale dog fighting event that took place two years ago.

In April 2022, the suspects converged at a Georgia property for a series of dog fighting matches. Law enforcement rescued 27 dogs that day, along with an additional 51 canines this week in connection with other arrests.

According to WFLA 8 News, law enforcement disrupted the dog fighting event and discovered multiple dogs kept inside crates in cars parked on the property. In a press release, the U.S. Department of Justice stated the suspects used their vehicles to hold dogs who had already fought, as well as those awaiting their turn.

Investigation into the case is ongoing. If convicted, each suspect will face a maximum five-year prison sentence. Additionally, they’ll each face a $250,000 fine for every count of animal fighting charges.

Under federal law, it’s illegal to fight dogs or participate as a spectator in a dog fighting event. Moreover, the law prohibits the training, transporting, selling, purchasing, delivering, or keeping of dogs for dog fighting purposes.

Animal Wellness Action president Wayne Pacelle commended authorities for the arrests made this week. In a statement, he shared: “We applaud the law enforcement officers who disrupted this criminal dogfighting ring. State and federal agencies are increasingly treating dogfighting crimes with the seriousness they deserve.”

Currently, Animal Wellness Action is campaigning for the implementation of the FIGHT Act, short for the Fighting Inhumane Gambling and High-Risk Trafficking Act. This proposed bill seeks to strengthen the protection of animal welfare.

“Dog Fighting and cockfighting are rampant across the nation, and we need even more resources and resolve to halt this barbarism against animals,” Mr. Pacelle stated. “The FIGHT Act is immensely important if we are determined to eradicate staged animal fighting in our nation.”

Police in Cranford, New Jersey, are looking for the person responsible for tying their dog to a pole and abandoning them. Thankfully, the dog — named Zeus — was rescued in time and is currently safe at a local shelter.

On Feb. 15 at around 6:00 a.m., Cranford police received reports of the abandoned dog left tied to a pole near Unami Park.

Police, together with animal control, responded to the scene and found the Pit Bull mix all alone with a sign attached to his collar. The sign featured the dog’s name along with the words: “Not rapid, no biting, need a home.”

Animal control took the poor pup to a local shelter, as reported by ABC7 NY. Luckily, he is fairing well health-wise and getting along with the shelter staff.

Cranford Police Captain Matthew Nazzaro condemned the dog’s abandonment, given that he was left out in the cold, which put him at risk of hypothermia. He was also without any food or water.

“It was 25, no water, no food around it,” Nazzaro stated. “There really is not an excuse for leaving a dog. There may be reasons, but there is not a reason to leave a dog in these extreme temperatures,” he added.

Luckily, Zeus has a microchip. Authorities are now searching for the dog’s previous owner, who, if found, may face criminal charges.

It’s no secret that owning a dog comes with its fair share of responsibilities and demands. Unfortunately, obstacles may sometimes get in the way of one giving their dog the quality life they deserve.

While one may have valid reasons why they’d want to give up their pup, the humane thing to do is to surrender the dog at a shelter instead of abandoning them. It’s unfair to abandon your beloved pet, as doing so endangers their health and exposes them to traumatic experiences.

HSN posted on Instagram expressing their delight at the visit by Brown and Bongiovi, as well as announcing the pup’s foster. Their post featured photos of the young couple and shelter workers cradling the new addition, Shark, now fondly named Jabba. They extended their appreciation to the pair for opening their hearts and home to this dog, remarking on the broad prospects their gesture has availed for him.

Rossdale described Chewy as his “absolute little furry bestie,” adding he “can’t stop thinking about him even if” it looks “like I’m doing something else.” Continuing, he shared, “He was the one there through all my hardest and loneliest times.”

Does it feel as though every time you catch your canine friend red-handed breaking a household rule, they often have what you think looks like a guilty face? Or can you recall the many times you thought you’d seen your dog giving you a confused look? 

Turns out, you weren’t imagining things. A new study conducted by a team of researchers from George Washington University discovered humans can accurately read and understand their dog’s facial expressions, particularly if the canine ranges between two and seven years of age. 

CBS News reports the scientists came to the conclusion after analyzing several interactions between humans and their dogs. 

According to the study, how a dog’s face looks — that is, whether they have a plain, single-colored face, or a multi-colored one — determines how well their owners will understand these facial expressions. 

Decoding a dog’s facial expressions

Interestingly, the researchers discovered dogs with plain, single-colored faces — like Golden Retrievers, for instance  — often convey facial expressions in a much more obvious manner during interactions with humans. 

Therefore, owners with plain-faced dogs have a higher chance of accurately discerning their dogs’ emotions and what they’re trying to communicate through facial expressions. 

On the other hand, the study found owners whose dogs have multi-colored faces — for example, Saint Bernards — usually have a harder time decoding their pup’s facial expressions. As such, these owners may not be able to correctly discern what their canines are thinking or feeling. 

Moreover, scientists concluded senior dogs often exhibit fewer facial expressions than younger ones. According to their findings, this is because senior dogs have lived with their owners for an extended period, so there is a better understanding between them and their humans. 

In other words, older dogs don’t feel the need to be more facially expressive to make a point to their pet parents. 

Carol Erickson, an advocate with the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), acknowledged the role of this study in helping strengthen the connection between people and their dogs. 

“This study is important because it shows that people are in the house with animals, you’re seeing animals on the street, and if you can learn to read their faces as they’ve learned to read ours, it really helps that human-animal bond,” Erickson shared.
