A Facebook user recently shared a heartbreaking video of a dog abandoned along a roadside with nine puppies inside a cardboard box. To make matters worse, the dog was blindfolded with a strong tape, leaving it anxious and unable to see. Meanwhile, the passerby, who recorded the video, eventually took note of the situation. Although the dog and the puppies suffered a terrible experience, they were eventually escorted to a safe place.

Meanwhile, the Facebook video that went viral shook netizens. They expressed their anger and disappointment at the individual who put the animals in this state. Some also prayed that the dogs would find their forever homes. Many thanked the passerby for rescuing the dogs left in a pitiful state.

On Saturday, August 31, a Facebook user shared a video of a mother dog blindfolded and left on the side of the road in Saraburi, Thailand. The passerby stopped his motorcycle to get a closer look. Meanwhile, the dog appeared to be frightened at the sounds of the vehicle and the man. But after the man went closer, he found a cardboard box filled with nine puppies.

The man could hear little squeaks from the box before he opened it to find the puppies. The box seemed like a courier box attached with information. The dog, afraid of the arrival, growled, ready to attack and defend itself from what it thought was danger.

The Facebook user, Amuwat Phothithong, spoke to the Thai news outlet Thairath about the experience. He confessed to returning home late evening when he saw the dog and the box. He witnessed the scene near the entrance of Nong Kae Temple. Upon hearing the cries of the puppies, the user opened the box.

Eventually, he called the rescue team, who stepped up to help. Another video showed the dog and the puppies safe in the rescue vehicle. Another local news site reported that one of Amuwat’s friends adopted the mother dog, naming her Paula. Meanwhile, the day after the rescue, he and his friends updated followers that the dog and puppies were safe in the shelter.

A group of people in Vadodara, a city in Gujarat, saved a senior dog stuck in floods. The video of the rescue operation quickly went viral. In the video, eight men lifted a single cot, on top of which sat a senior Labrador Retriever. The men were chest-deep in the flooding water on the city’s local street, which was severely impacted by the floods.

The video, captured by Vidith Sharma, founder of Noida-based animal trust Save a Stray, shows the men smiling as they rescue the dog. The post’s caption stated, “An old senior dog was stuck in the floods in Vadodara, Gujarat, but the entire community came together to rescue the dog safely.” Amid the chaos, uncertainty, and worry, acts of compassion and kindness like these found a place in the internet’s heart. Social media users applauded the group’s effort to save the dog.

The caption further said, “Such compassion and love are truly inspiring – a powerful message for us all: never leave anyone behind in times of trouble. Thank you to everyone involved in this heartwarming rescue!”

Vadodara experienced a massive flood-like situation in August 2024 when heavy rains caused water levels to exceed those in local dams and rivers. Many people reportedly lost their lives, and several village residents faced displacement. Furthermore, rescue operations from the military and other non-profit organizations delivered food packets to the affected localities.

For dogs in shelters and rescues, the holidays can be a lonely time. Among the chaos that ensues this time of year, it’s easy to forget there are thousands of pups who will be spending these weeks without loved ones or a home to call their own.

If your family isn’t quite ready to permanently welcome home a four-legged friend, there are still plenty of ways you can help a homeless dog during the holiday season. In so doing, you can also help animal shelters and local rescues. Many of them will likely be overburdened processing animal intakes with a skeleton crew as staff and volunteers are away for the season. This is especially true as some misguided gift givers bring home shiny new Christmas puppies and people, heartbreakingly, surrender their senior dogs.

Volunteer at an adoption event

There are tons of adoption events held around the holidays. Volunteering at such events event is not only extremely helpful but also very rewarding. You get to see dogs find forever homes and meet happy dog parents leaving with a new family member. Rescues also need help at events where they take many animals in their care to pet supply stores or other public venues offering the space. You could be responsible for playing with a puppy and walking them on a leash around the venue. You might even be asked to help keep potentially anxious dogs calm and collected as they meet potential adopters. Either way, you’re getting to love on pets who truly deserve — and appreciate — the attention for several hours. What’s not to love about that?

Assist shelters by cleaning kennels, walking dogs

(Photo by picture alliance / Karsten Klama | picture alliance via Getty Images)

Shelters can always use volunteers to clean kennels, walk dogs, and perform other day-to-day duties. Although this type of work isn’t glamorous, it’s necessary. Many shelters and rescues run on limited funding, so every hour you can put in frees up staff to take care of other important tasks. Moreover, the extra attention and socialization with more people will only serve to benefit the dogs and reduce the likelihood of depression, behavioral concerns, and socialization issues. Plus, you get to meet loads of adorable pups. In fact, you might even decide to take one home!

Donate money in an animal lover’s name

Have a coworker, friend, or family member who loves dogs? Maybe you lost someone and you’re looking to honor their memory this holiday season. Consider making a donation to a rescue or animal shelter in their name as a gift. In fact, The Humane Society provides an easy option for memorial contributions. Some employers will even match donations to verified nonprofit organizations.

Moreover, some pet owners are choosing to celebrate Christmas by making a donation in honor of their own dogs — whether they have a pet at home or recently lost one. Whatever the case, it’s a nice tradition to add to your yearly celebration of the season.

Foster a rescue or shelter dog

Fostering a dog is a much bigger commitment than cleaning kennels or working a few hours on a Saturday at an adoption fair. It means taking a dog home and treating them like they are your own. You’ll be their temporary family, which is something rescue and shelter dogs could use around the holidays. If you find yourself in need of some company but aren’t ready to commit to adoption, consider fostering this holiday season. You might end up “foster failing” and finding a forever friend.

The other note of caution here is, however, that bringing a dog into your home means accepting a certain degree of risk. In particular, if you have children, other dogs, or cats, it’s important to know how the foster animal will react and vice versa. Ensure you have a home environment that makes fostering possible. More importantly, be ready to commit adequate time to acclimating the dog to their new — albeit, temporary — surroundings. Above all, be patient and kind with this animal who has likely been through so much upheaval in such a short period of time. Given this, prepare for potential potty accidents, excessive barking or licking, and other anxiety-driven responses. In addition, be sure not to unintentionally expose the pup to any common holiday hazards.

Donate food or other items

Short on time? No worries. Donating essential items to shelters — like dog food, toys, beds, creates, leashes, and harnesses — is another great way to volunteer your resources. You can gather up blankets, unopened and unexpired treats, dog toys, and more to drop them off. Be sure to check your local shelter’s website or social media pages, as they often have lists of items needed. Some even have Amazon Wish Lists where you can purchase items that will be delivered directly to the organization. That said, contributing necessities is as easy as sitting on your couch and scrolling through a website. No matter your energy level, this is a simple and quick, but meaningful, way to help animals who need your assistance the most.

If you want to make an even bigger impact, consider organizing a pet donation drive at your place of business, school, church, or civic center. Undoubtedly, this approach requires a bit more time from you, but you could even get your neighborhood, coworkers, social organizations, and children involved. People often feel extra generous this time of year and helping shelter pets is a worthy cause to support.

Giving back is the ultimate gift

No matter your capacity, if you have some time, energy, or treasure to spare, consider showing shelter dogs some love this hap-happiest season of all. You truly have the power to make this the most wonderful time of the year for homeless animals. What’s more, your gift — whatever form it takes — will help the animal lovers who work tirelessly year-round to run rescues and shelters continue to do their incredibly important work.

If you’ve ever had a dog, you know the joy and merriment they bring with them. Now, just imagine how a little effort on your part this holiday season might help even one shelter pup bring that level of cheer to their new forever family. And it’ll be possible because you were a part of their journey to being adopted. So, if you let your heart be light, maybe next year, all these sweet dogs’ troubles will be out of sight.

“Puppies for sale” is one of the top web-search phrases used by those looking to share their life with a furry companion or expand their existing menagerie. Sometimes people on social media, other websites, or even people down the street will offer “puppies for free.”

You may wonder what the harm is in buying puppies or taking them from someone giving them away for free. Puppies look so cute, after all. It shouldn’t matter where they come from.

But before you fall in love with those puppy dog eyes, you should know what happens when you buy a puppy or take a dog for free. And, you should know why you should ultimately adopt a dog instead.

What’s wrong with buying puppies for sale

Puppies for sale in pet stores are often supplied by puppy mills. In fact, over 2 million puppies are bred in mills each year. Moreover, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that nearly 10,000 puppy mills are currently operating in the country.

Puppy mills are often overcrowded facilities where dogs live in horrendous conditions. Dogs also forced to breed and give birth until they’re of no use anymore. These animals are not loved and well cared for. In truth, they only exist for the profit of the people who run the facilities.

So, when you see a dog in a puppy store, imagine what that dog’s parents went through. As such, cruel breeding practices perpetuated by puppy mills are a business practice many pet stores support. Unless you know local shelters supply your pet store, think about who benefits from your purchase and who suffers.

Moreover, in recent years, many online puppy sales have been scams used to target unsuspecting buyers. Unfortunately, these purchasers often end up without a puppy while also having to navigate a myriad of financial issues after having their credit card and bank account information stolen. This is especially true around holidays like Christmas when people consider purchasing a puppy for a gift, often as they gloss over how a pet is a long-term commitment. What’s more, in some countries like Scotland, online sales of holiday puppies are being used to fund criminal enterprises.

Why you shouldn’t buy from a cheap breeder

(Photo Credit: Colin McConnell | Toronto Star via Getty Images)

You might consider buying from a cheap breeder, instead, or someone who’s irresponsible and didn’t have their fixed. There are problems with these purchases, too.

Backyard breeders often don’t care about inbreeding or avoiding health concerns for their puppies. In turn, this can result in horrible birth defects. Moreover, cheap breeders perpetuate the pet overpopulation crisis by producing unwanted, unhealthy dogs. Purchasing one of these pups can also cost you serious cash when it comes to seeking proper veterinary treatment. Even worse, you may go through an emotional rollercoaster watching your dog get sick and be unaware of how to best treat them. This will be especially true once the unscrupulous breeder starts dodging your phone calls.

People whose dogs had puppies by mistake usually don’t bother with vaccinations or spaying and neutering. Also, they typically don’t do background checks, so anyone can buy the dogs. Some people rely on that fact to take these puppies for use as bait dogs in dog fighting rings. As a result, the puppies suffer horrible fates.

Buying puppies for sale from a responsible breeder

Reputable breeders provide more care for their dogs and make sure that puppies are healthy. We can all agree that’s a good thing. In fact, they’ll often make sure that the dogs go to good homes, too. Some even guarantee that they will care for the dogs you purchase from them for life. So, if any dog is returned to them, they’ll find that dog a good, new home or take care of them until the end of their days.

There may be some situations where buying from a breeder is the best choice for you. That may be more true if you are in need of a certified service dog. Albeit, many breeds can be trained to serve as medically-necessary companion animals. You may also opt to contact a breeder if you’re looking for a specific working or herding dog breed — like a Great Pyrenees, Australian Shepherd, or Border Collie. As part of running a farm or agricultural business, it may make sense to purchase a dog who was born to protect a flock or herd cattle.

Downsides to purchasing from reputable breeders

As an alternative choice to adoption, seeking a responsible breeder isn’t nearly as bad as getting a dog from a puppy mill or backyard breeder. However, the problem with buying from breeders is that 1.2 million unwanted dogs are euthanized in shelters every year. Why not save one of those dogs instead of encouraging more breeding? Also, buying from a breeder often comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

If you buy a dog from a breeder, it means a dog in a shelter didn’t get a home with you. Undoubtedly, responsible breeders are a major step up from backyard breeders and puppy mills. That said, just remember there are already dogs in shelters who deserve a better life and who would be a perfect fit for you.

What’s wrong with free puppies

(Photo Credit: MelkiNimages | Getty Images)

If you see an offer for “free puppies,” don’t ignore the red flags. Usually, these puppies are found by concerned people who don’t know any better. They may not have done their due diligence to see if the mother — if she was also found — is microchipped or if someone in the area has reported that they are looking for their missing pup. The person who found the puppy or even an entire litter may just want to offload them quickly so they don’t feel responsible for incurring the cost of proper vetting. Sometimes, these puppies are the result of a pet getting pregnant unexpectedly. Either way, these dogs are often advertised as being “free to a good home.”

But who makes sure that they’re going to a good home? Is the person offering them doing background checks or holding meetings for prospective pet parents to interact with the puppies? Probably not. Sometimes they do, and that’s an important distinction.

It’s possible that the person offering these puppies hasn’t considered that they might be taken by people who want cheap bait dogs to train their dogs to fight. If you see someone giving away dogs for free, inform them that the dogs’ safety is at risk. Suggest that they surrender the puppies to a shelter or local rescue, instead.

Other health considerations of free puppies

Additionally, these puppies are usually not vaccinated and are often separated from their mothers too early. It takes at least eight weeks for a puppy to mature to the point where they don’t need to be with their mother or litter mates, sometimes even longer. Skipping crucial developmental steps can result in the dog growing up to have behavioral and socialization issues.

Ask yourself if these puppies have been nursed so they get the valuable antibodies in their mother’s milk. Consider if these puppies had health checks by a veterinarian. Both are unlikely.

Why you should adopt a dog instead

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2121" height="1414" src="https://dogtime.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2023/12/GettyImages-1322461027.jpg?w=1024" alt="Happy family spending a spring day with their adopted golden retriever in nature, instead of one purchased from a place with puppies for sale.
There are countless reasons why adopting a shelter puppy or dog is a better choice than searching for “puppies for sale” or “puppies free to a good home.” The same is true of bringing home a pet from a reputable rescue organization. Some of the best reasons are:

You save a life: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates 6.2 million dogs and cats are surrendered to shelters annually in the United States. Of those, 3.1 million are dogs. Annually, 920,000 of the surrendered animals are euthanized.

You get a healthy pet: Shelter and rescue dogs have been spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and tested for heartworms.

You’ll save money: The fee for adopting a shelter dog covers the medical expenses for the services listed above. What’s more, it is almost always a drop in the bucket compared to what you would pay to a breeder. It’s surely less than the cost charged by a pet store that hasn’t taken care of the dog’s medical necessities and that, quite possibly, acquires their puppies for sale from puppy mills.

You gain a lifetime of loyalty: Rescued dogs who have had less-than-ideal lives before making it to the shelter tend to be more loyal and affectionate when given a second chance by a kind, loving person or family.

You’ll set a good example: You’ll teach your children, family members, and friends the value of offering second chances. Your actions will illustrate how one person can make a difference by showing compassion toward an animal in need.

Adopt, don’t shop for puppies

Don’t buy into the myths that, because an animal ended up in a shelter, they’re unhealthy or must have some sort of behavioral problem. Most shelter dogs are as healthy and “normal” as any other dog.

So before you type, “puppies for sale” into your next Google search browser, pause to consider the points above and take the first step in making a real difference in a dog’s life. Instead, research local rescue shelters that are ready and willing to place a loving canine with someone who can demonstrate a commitment to responsible pet ownership.

(Photo credit: Capuski / Getty Images)

Choosing to adopt a new dog is exciting. Even so, the decision comes with a myriad of choices to consider. Ensuring you take the time to weigh your options and research what caring for a wagging tail entails can make all the difference in the success of your pet adoption.

Before you rush into this life-changing decision, you should ask yourself a few questions to make sure you’re prepared. You also need to examine if your family and home are ready to welcome a pet. Equally important, you need to know how to tell if you’re picking the right shelter or rescue group to adopt from.

Bringing home the right pup for you and your family requires forethought and research. It also demands you to be realistic about the level of care and attention you can provide for your four-legged companion. For instance, do you work from home or do you travel frequently? Are you comfortable hiring a dog walker if you’re in the office for long stretches of time? Do you have the bandwidth to care for a dog with disabilities? What about a high energy breed who needs lots of physical activity? Would a senior pup who likes hours of couch time be a better fit?

To help you navigate the road to pet parenthood, we’ve compiled some initial questions to help you get started on this journey. Here’s what you should know before you adopt a pet dog or puppy.

Are you prepared to adopt a pet

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2121" height="1414" src="https://dogtime.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2023/08/GettyImages-1322838510.jpg?w=1024" alt="Closeup portrait of cheerful African American girl embracing her Labrador dog from shelter adoption as they spend time with parents in living room at home.
A dog or puppy is a huge commitment of time, money, and energy, and you need to make sure that you’re ready before you bring a pet home. Are you adopting this pup for the right reasons?

Bringing home a new pooch is a life-altering choice. You can’t just change your mind if you decide it’s too much work or costs more than you expected. (Believe us, it will, but it’s worth every red cent…and more.) As a dog parent, you must ensure you will be able to provide your dog with all of the necessities. This, of course, includes veterinary treatment. You’ll need to make time to get your dog up-to-date on vaccinations, possibly even taking off work to make it to appointments. If the expense of such is potentially prohibitive for you, there are options that exist for low-cost vet care in many places.

Equally important, you need to have patience when it comes to training. You’ll also need to exhibit grace under fire and be willing to continue teaching your pup even after they inevitably have a few accidents.

Are you already planning for the future

Responsible pet ownership means caring for your pet for the long term. Accordingly, you must consider a dog’s potential needs in the future — including increased healthcare costs, administering medication, and even purchasing ramps or stairs for an arthritic pup to get to their favorite spot.

Moreover, it also means making sure if you move apartments, that your dog can come with you to your next home. In the event that you get sick or are in an accident, it means having a plan in place so your pup has someone to take care of them if you are unable to do so. Pet parenthood is not something that should be entered into on a whim.

What age dog is right for you

Adopting a puppy is different from adopting an adult dog, and adopting a senior dog has its own challenges, too. Each developmental period brings with it a whole slate of specialized needs. Understanding the life stages of a canine companion may help you determine what age pet to consider for adoption.

Adopting puppies

(Photo credit: PeopleImages / Getty Images)

With puppies, you might have to factor in the cost of vaccination, spaying and neutering, as well as obedience training and socialization classes. You’ll need to purchase new equipment like leashes, bowls, toys, bedding, and more.

Puppies require a lot of stimulation and play, and also frequent naps. They may not be potty trained, so be prepared to clean up some accidents. For the sake of both your floors and your own peace of mind, you’ll need to commit to a training routine to reduce future instances of house soiling.

A puppy’s immune system is not always fully developed, and they may have medical needs that adult dogs don’t have. Resultantly, you will have to wait to take them to dog parks until they’ve had certain vaccines. This will reduce their exposure to diseases and illnesses they have yet to be treated for.

To learn more, read our guide on everything you need to know before adopting a puppy.

Adopting adult dogs

Adult dogs are usually up-to-date on vaccines and already spayed or neutered by their shelter. They tend to have a grasp on basic commands and may have started some sort of behavior training. And while these pups also tend to be housetrained, that’s not always the case.

Good shelters and rescue groups will often work with dogs in their care to teach them to be social and well-behaved, as it increases their chances of being adopted. This is something you should ask your local shelter about before bringing your dog home.

Adult dogs have exercise needs and require mental stimulation. It is important that you can keep up with them. You may have to hire a dog walker if you’re gone for most of the day or a pet sitter if you travel.

Adoption of senior dogs

Senior dogs tend to be more relaxed. While their exercise needs may not be as extreme as puppies or adult dogs, they do sometimes come with health issues that must be addressed. You will also have to be prepared for end-of-life care.

That said, senior dogs tend to be more used to living with humans and are able to become very attached easily. They make for great cuddle buddies, and they are often a dog of choice for senior owners who want a loving pet with a manageable energy level.

Before you bring a dog home, you need to have a good, long talk with your family. Make sure everyone is on the same page, and that everyone’s responsibilities are made clear. Who will be the primary caretaker? Who will do the feeding, the bathing, the walking, and so on? Dogs need routine. Accordingly, establishing a schedule early-on is critical to the success of your dog’s adoption.

Once your human family is on board, you also need to make sure that your other furry family members, if you have any, are ready. If you already have dogs or cats, make sure they are capable of getting along with other animals. Learn how to safely introduce a new pup to your resident felines. Understand how your existing dog or dogs will react when another pup enters their domain. Consider visiting a dog park or have a friend bring their pups to your house for a visit. Would your pets get used to sharing the attention and resources? Make sure you know how to make a good first impression when bringing a new dog home, so that all fur family members can get off on the right foot…err, paw.

Is your home ready for a dog’s adoption

Do you live in an apartment? Is your condo dog-friendly? In either case, figuring out the breeds which thrive in homes without regular access to a secure, grassy area is important. If you have more space for your pup to roam, are there wild animals and predators to be aware of? What steps will you take to safeguard your yard for your dog? Are you prepared to install a secure fence?

When it comes to getting your home ready, you have some more decisions to make. Where will your new dog sleep? Are some furniture items or rooms off limits? Where will your dog go potty, and who will clean it up?

Stock up on supplies like crates, doggy beds, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, toys, cleaners for accidents, and maybe even baby or dog gates to block off certain areas.

Remember that puppies tend to have accidents, so you may want to set up a play area on a room with a hard surface floor for easy cleaning. You should also read more about preparing your home for a dog.

There are many things to consider when choosing between a dog or puppy for adoption.

Think about your living space. Is it big enough for a large, energetic dog, or would it be more appropriate for a small, mellow dog? Do you have a big yard or open space for running? Or do you need to walk your dog outside on a leash every time they need a potty break?

Some apartments and condominiums have weight limits for dogs. Make sure that if you get a dog who isn’t fully grown yet, their size won’t be a problem in the future. Similarly, some places also have restrictions on breeds residents may own. Be sure you’ve done your research prior to adopting your pup.

Different breeds have different medical needs, energy levels, and natural abilities to adapt to training and socialization. Some dogs are predisposed to medical conditions that may require a larger financial obligation. Other dogs are highly energetic, requiring physical and mental stimulation or they’ll become destructive. Perhaps you need a dog who likes to go for long runs or who can catch some waves with you.

If you have guests in your home often, you’ll want a dog who’s more socially adaptable and able to be trained to not jump on new people. You’ll also want a dog who doesn’t hump houseguests.

Of course, you can always consider bringing home a lovable mutt. They tend to have fewer health problems related to heredity and inbreeding because they tend to be more genetically diverse. A lot of mixed-breed dogs get the best qualities of both parents. This is known as hybrid vigor.

The important thing with any dog is to meet them in person and make sure you have a connection. There’s nothing that can give you a better indication of the dog that’s right for you than a real-life introduction. That’s where a shelter or rescue group comes in.

Some people steer clear of shelters or rescues because they believe the dogs there aren’t “good” dogs. Nothing could be further from the truth.

While many dogs are surrendered for behavior problems, the vast majority of those problems could have been prevented. Moreover, they can often be treated and addressed with training, attention, and exercise.

Many dogs are surrendered because of a family’s change in circumstances — a move, financial loss, illness, or blending of families — and not because of the dog.

Some people don’t realize how much time and work puppies — and even adult dogs — require and become fed up with the responsibility.

You can find a good fit for your home by carefully evaluating a shelter dog or puppy and introducing them to every person who lives with you.

Shelters

Shelters house animals available for adoption, as well as strays. Usually they’re at least partially funded by their city, but some are completely dependent on private donations. The quality of shelters varies dramatically, depending on where they’re located and how much funding they receive.

Some shelters provide basic medical care, training, and spay/neutering. Others are more like holding pens than shelters and don’t bother with the kind of care experts believe is essential to a dog’s well-being, like daily walks.

The population of available dogs usually changes quickly and regularly.

At the best shelters, the staff take notes, and sometimes post them, on how the dog is doing. Some shelters do extensive tests to gauge a dog’s personality and what sort of home would be the best fit. Many more shelters do not, and you’re on your own.

Some shelters allow people to put a hold on dogs they want to adopt. Before you lose your heart to a dog, make sure someone else doesn’t already have a claim on them.

Some shelters euthanize animals when they get overcrowded. Many no-kill shelters will only accept dogs believed to be adoptable — i.e., those who don’t have aggression or health problems and are younger.

If you’re interested in a dog, make sure you ask how much longer they have at the shelter. That is, do you have a long time to make your decision, or is euthanasia scheduled in two days?

(Photo credit: Group4 Studio / Getty Images)

Rescue groups

Rescue groups are organizations that take dogs out of shelters and keep them in foster homes, and sometimes private kennels, until homes can be found. Some are breed specific, while others take all types of dogs. Rescues also tend to be choosier when it comes to who is allowed to adopt the available pups in their care.

Overall, they tend to give the dogs more medical and behavioral care than many shelters.

Dogs are happier in foster homes than in shelters, so it’s easier to assess their personalities. You’ll already know how they’ll act in a real home setting.

You can get a good idea of the dog’s temperament and habits from the foster family, since they live with the dog.

The dog is not likely to be euthanized, unless they display serious aggression or health issues.

These groups often have adoption events at public places such as pet supply stores, so you can drop by and meet several dogs. If you’re interested in a specific dog you’ve seen on the group’s website, you can ask for that dog to be brought to the event.

If the time for adoption is right

Now that you’ve learned more about what it takes, do you think you’re ready to adopt a pet pooch? Remember, each dog is different, from their personalities to their unique needs. Utilizing this list of questions is an ideal jumping off point for ensuring your journey into dog parenthood is successful — whether this is your first pup or your fifth. Brushing up on how to give your pooch the best life possible is a sure-fire sign that you’re ready to welcome a new dog into your life.

Adopting a dog is one of the most exciting experiences an animal lover can have. Falling in love with a fur baby and bringing them home is a feel-good event unlike any other. But before you and Fido can embark on a life together, you have to find that four-legged friend that makes your heart go pitter-patter. You know that buying a pup from a dog breeder is a bad idea, but you’re unsure if you should start your search for canine companionship at a shelter or through a rescue organization. With this purpose in mind, we’re going to break down the advantages and disadvantages of adopting a dog through a shelter or a rescue.

Differences between a shelter and a rescue

Shelters are facilities that provide a safe place and veterinary care for surrendered, stray, or abandoned animals. They are often government-funded, and their primary aim is to find homes for as many animals as quickly as possible.

Rescue organizations are usually non-profit organizations. They are often run by volunteers that save animals from shelters, puppy mills, and other dangerous situations. They then place the pups in foster homes until permanent homes are found. Some rescues are specific to a certain breed (like Chihuahuas) or demographic (like senior dogs).

Advantages of shelter adoptions

Selection

The sheer number and variety of dogs available at a shelter are among the main advantages of adopting at a shelter. Are you looking for a puppy, a lap dog, a walking buddy, or a quiet senior pup? You’ll likely be able to find that perfect canine companion at a shelter. If you go to a shelter one day and you don’t click with any of the animals, don’t worry. There is so much turnover at most shelters that there will be a whole new pack of dogs to meet soon.

Cost

Adopting from a shelter is often less expensive than a rescue. Right now, as many shelters experience overcrowding, adoption fees may be lower than usual. Some shelters even waive them altogether.

Speed

The adoption process at a shelter is often faster than through a rescue. That’s because shelters are trying to rehome dogs as quickly as possible so they can help more pups. A prospective dog owner can find a dog online, visit them in person, and go home with their new fur baby all on the same day. Rescue organizations, however, often have a more rigorous vetting process. This process may involve an application, interview, home visit, and reference checks.

Ease

Shelters have few restrictions about who can adopt which animal. Unless there is a safety risk (say, a dog that doesn’t respond well to young children), most people can adopt whichever animal they choose. Rescue organizations, however, can be very picky about potential pet owners. Rescues may require that certain animals go only to homes without children, live only with work-from-home parents, or have access to fenced-in yards.

Health

Shelters generally provide basic veterinary care, vaccinations, and spay/neuter services for every dog eligible for adoption. While the cost of these services is factored into the adoption fee, it is usually well below what you would pay to have the procedures done with a private veterinarian. Some shelters also provide medication for any current health conditions your adoptable dog might have.

Virtue

When you adopt from a shelter, you can feel good about your decision because you may have saved a dog from euthanasia.

Disadvantages of shelter adoptions

Limited information

Shelters don’t always know where the dogs in their care came from. They also may not know how they behave in a home setting. Their health history may also be a mystery. What’s more, a dog’s behavior in a kennel at the shelter may be wildly different than how they will behave at home.

Trauma

Many dogs who end up in shelters have experienced some form of trauma, be it the separation from their former families or living on the streets for extended periods of time. They are likely stressed out in a noisy shelter where they feel threatened by other dogs and the constant stream of strangers going by their kennel. All of these things add up and can alter a dog’s personality and behavior.

Health issues

While shelters endeavor to care for all the dogs under their roofs, the fact is that a large number of animals living together tends to spread illness and the resources of a shelter only go so far. The dog you adopt from a shelter may get sick as a result and require medication after adoption. If a dog had a procedure or surgery done while in the care of the shelter, be aware that complications could arise post-adoption that you will have to care for.

Advantages of rescue adoptions

Targeted search

Going to a shelter can be hit or miss depending on the day. Conversely, with a rescue organization, you will only meet dogs that you are truly interested in and that will be a good match for you. You also aren’t vying with other potential pet parents for the same animal. This is because a rescue will usually make sure to only introduce a pet to one potential adopter at a time. Accordingly, this limits the amount of time and energy you have to invest in finding the right dog. Moreover, it reduces the disappointment you experience if you can’t get the one you want. Best of all, the process allows you to calmly decide if a pup is perfect for you.

Detailed information

Rescues tend to know more about the dogs they care for because those pups are often living with foster parents. Because these people have seen the day-to-day behavior of the animals in a home setting, they’ll be better equipped to match you with a dog whose temperament, training, and behavior align with your lifestyle. In the case of breed-specific rescues, you will further be able to prepare yourself for your new furry family member with breed information as well.

Support

Rescues are heavily invested in placing animals in the right homes and making sure they stay there. The people who volunteer for rescues are often very knowledgeable about resources that can help you learn how to be an effective and compassionate pet parent for the long haul.

Disadvantages of rescue adoptions

Selection

Rescue organizations rarely have the sheer number of adoptable dogs available that shelters do. It will likely take longer to find a pup that you want to adopt through a rescue organization.

Adoption restrictions

Rescues often have a more rigorous adoption process than shelters, so you may feel like you are put under the microscope while you’re trying to adopt from a rescue. Many personal and private parts of your life —from your employment status and your living situation to prior pet ownership and your family makeup — may be picked apart in the process. Those wanting to adopt from a rescue must brace themselves for a lot of questions, as well as possible rejection.

Cost

Rescues often have higher adoption fees than shelters, which may be a barrier for some potential adopters. Some rescues also do not provide certain health services, like spaying and neutering, which you will have to pay for out of pocket in addition to the adoption fees.

Accessibility

Rescues are often less visible than shelters, so you’re going to have to do your research if you’re determined to find one that will work with you.

Choosing between shelters and rescues

Adopting a dog is a major decision, and a deeply personal one. While both shelters and rescues have their pros and cons, it is important to weigh them carefully before making a decision. Ultimately, whatever avenue helps you find your ideal fur baby is the right one for you.

When looking for a dog to adopt, you may have noticed certain buzzwords such as “velcro dog” and “very talkative” when reading the adoption post. But, what do these terms mean? Are you doomed to adopt a dog with behavioral problems or one that won’t fit in well with your household? Here’s how to understand some of those dog adoption posts, so you can find the right furry friend for you.

The purpose of dog adoption posts

An adoption post is a listing that gives you a bit more information about the dog you’re looking to adopt. Often, these give general breed and age information, any history the shelter or rescue has on the dog, and some information about the dog’s personality or suitable home life. The listing may also include photos or videos.

Adoption posts may sometimes use buzzwords to indicate if a dog has an issue that may need some extra care. However, that doesn’t mean the adoption will be hopeless! It just means you’ll know what to expect when you bring your new friend home.

“Food-motivated”

This term can mean a few things. A food-motivated dog may get a little too excited when the treats come out. But, that just means they appreciate the love! Food-motivated dogs may also be more cautious of people around their bowls or may guard food resources. An experienced pet parent or one willing to take it slow with training is a great match.

“Labrador Retriever mix”

You may notice a dog with the breed listing of Labrador Retriever mix. While these dogs can have Labrador Retriever blood, they may be mixed with terriers, shepherds, bully breeds, and more. Or, it can sometimes mean that the shelter isn’t sure what the dog’s breed makeup is. Think of it as a fun grab-bag of all the best breeds mixed together!

“Loves to play”

Dogs that are listed as playful or active are usually ones that will need a lot of exercise. These dogs are great in a home that has lots of activity, such as those of active joggers or hikers. If you’re looking for a companion that can keep up with your exercise routine, look for a listing with this included. Dogs that love to play also make for great entertainment when they get the zoomies!

“Takes time to warm up”

If you noticed the dog you’re looking at is listed as one that takes time to warm up, they could be shy, undersocialized, or fearful in new situations. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, it’s important to understand you may need to give extra care and patience until your new dog is more comfortable. These dogs may also benefit from a training program to help them feel more comfortable in new situations.

“Talkative”

Is that Siberian Husky listed as talkative? A talkative dog may be extra vocal. They may bark, howl, or make lots of noise when extra excited. While these dogs may not be great for an apartment or condo, they provide lots of fun and make great companions for pet parents with lots of room to run around.

“Velcro dog”

A dog listed as a “Velcro dog” may experience bouts of separation anxiety when you aren’t home. It’s possible these dogs don’t do well alone, or experienced trauma in the past that makes them a little clingy. But, these dogs are great if you work from home, are retired, or are looking for a dog that will be a great couch companion.

“Wants only your attention”

Sometimes a listing states a dog only wants your attention or should be an only pet. This means the dog may not get along with younger children or other dogs and pets in the household. These dogs, however, are great for experienced pet parents or those without children who want a best friend they can dote on all to themselves.

“Furever home”

A fun play on the forever home, a “furever” home is the perfect spot for a dog to settle in, enjoy life, and live it up. If you find a dog that fits all of your wants and lifestyle, why not give them that “furever” home they’ve been dreaming of? You won’t regret it.

While dog adoption posts may be confusing at times, it’s just another way for shelters and rescues to help make the adoption process go a little more smoothly. Now that you’ve decoded some terms, learn how to find the right shelter or rescue to look for your next best friend.

The joy of bringing a new dog into your life is immeasurable. Much like the anticipation that accompanies the arrival of a new baby, the process of preparing for your furry companion is a special time. In a creative twist that mirrors the concept of baby registries, some dog parents are creating a gift registry for their four-legged friends. This involves compiling a comprehensive list of essential items your new dog will need. Then, dog parents share it with friends and family to ask for help in purchasing the items. Some new dog parents may even host a “puppy shower” to welcome their new furry family member. Let’s explore the trend of dog gift registries. We’ll also delve into how this practice can enhance the overall experience of integrating a new pup into your home.

Dogs need a lot of stuff

The list of supplies necessary for a happy and healthy dog can be quite extensive. Pups need cozy beds, nutritious food, toys, grooming tools, and training gear. The idea behind creating a dog registry is to ensure that you are ready for your new canine companion’s arrival. By curating a thorough list of essentials, you organize and streamline the shopping process. You also provide friends and family with a clear understanding of what items would be most beneficial for both you and your dog.

Dogs are cherished family members

For numerous individuals and families, dogs are cherished members of the household. Dog parents consider pups their children, hence the name “fur baby.” Expectant parents create baby registries to prepare for a new baby’s arrival, rallying support from friends and family. The concept of dog registries offers a similar avenue for friends and family to actively participate in welcoming a new dog into your life. This innovative approach alleviates some of the financial burden associated with pet parenthood. Also, it provides an opportunity to celebrate the anticipation and excitement that comes with adopting a new furry friend.

Community is crucial to successful dog adoptions

Adopting a dog is more than just the act of obtaining necessary supplies. It’s about building a robust and caring support system. When you share your dog registry with friends and family, you create a network of individuals who are invested in the well-being of your new pup. This sense of community goes beyond the simple act of contributing items. It fosters a shared sense of enthusiasm for your furry companion’s journey. By involving others in the arrival of your fur baby, you set the stage for a thriving and enduring bond with your new pooch.

A gift registry for your new dog is one way to celebrate the new pet in your life. In the same way that baby registries streamline the process of readying everyone for a newborn, a gift registry for your dog helps you amass the essentials while building a network of support. By enthusiastically sharing your excitement with friends and family, you ensure your dog has all the necessities. You also establish a strong foundation for a harmonious and joyful life together. Whether it’s the delight of selecting the perfect toy or the heartwarming feeling of communal enthusiasm, a gift registry for your dog has the potential to greatly enhance the experience of becoming a proud and loving dog parent.

When it comes to adopting a furry friend, shelters and rescues play a pivotal role in helping dogs find loving homes. These organizations dedicate their efforts to rehoming dogs in need. They often go above and beyond to connect canines with compatible families. However, an uncomfortable truth occasionally emerges: shelters and rescues might sometimes bend the truth or withhold information from potential adopters in their eagerness to place dogs. While the intentions are usually noble, these actions can have unintended consequences for both the adopters and the dogs involved. We’re going to delve into the question: Do shelters and rescues lie about dogs?

Why shelters and rescues bend the truth

The sad fact is that shelters and rescues do occasionally lie about dogs in their care. For every successful adoption story you hear, there is inevitably another one about a disappointing experience with dog adoption.

In the quest to ensure that dogs find forever homes, shelters and rescues may inadvertently lean towards exaggeration or omission. The goal is to make dogs more appealing to potential adopters by emphasizing their positive traits and downplaying potential challenges. This practice can range from describing a dog as “playful and energetic” when they’re actually hyperactive, to overlooking certain behavioral issues that may arise in a home environment. Or, a shelter or rescue may deem a pup “mixed breed” instead of labeling them a Pit Bull due to the negative reputation of bully breeds. While this approach might increase a dog’s chances of being adopted, it can also set adopters up for unexpected challenges down the road.

Unintentional lies

It’s important to recognize that not all information presented by shelters and rescues is intentionally false. A significant challenge arises when dealing with stray animals whose backgrounds are often shrouded in mystery. Shelters might make educated guesses about a dog’s breed or age based on physical appearance, but these estimations aren’t always accurate. The lack of concrete information can lead to potential adopters receiving inaccurate details about the dog’s characteristics and needs. With over 500 dog breeds in existence, dog breed and age errors are inevitable unless the dog undergoes genetic testing.

Consequences of deception

While these lies the arise during dog adoption might not be malicious, they are still harmful. The consequences of inaccurate information can have a ripple effect that impacts everyone involved. When adopters make the decision to welcome a dog into their home based on false or incomplete information, it can lead to disappointment, frustration, and even feelings of betrayal when the dog’s true nature surfaces. A dog who was described as housetrained might have accidents. A pup labeled as safe around children could exhibit fear, aggression, or herding behavior with the little ones. And a dog noted as comfortable with cats might end up chasing them due to a high prey drive. As a result, adopters might feel compelled to return the dog. These kinds of surrenders cause emotional distress for both the family and their short-lived canine companion.

Furthermore, shelters and rescues, often operated by volunteers or underpaid workers who are already stretched thin, face the added burden of managing returns and attempting to rehome dogs that have already been through the adoption process. This cycle of deception, return, and re-adoption adds stress to these organizations. It diverts valuable time and resources away from other dogs in need. It’s a situation that’s detrimental to all parties involved, from the adopters and dogs to the shelters and rescues themselves.

How to protect yourself when adopting a dog

As a potential adopter, it’s important to be proactive and take steps to protect yourself and ensure a successful adoption experience. While shelters and rescues play a crucial role in rehoming dogs, adopters can empower themselves by being well-informed and vigilant during the adoption process. Here are some tips for adopters:

Ask detailed questions

One of the most effective ways to gather accurate information about a dog is by asking specific questions. Don’t hesitate to inquire about the dog’s behavior in various settings, interactions with other animals, history of medical issues, and any training or socialization they’ve received. Understand the dog’s routine, exercise needs, and potential triggers for behavioral challenges. By seeking detailed information, you can gain a clearer picture of the dog’s personality and whether it aligns with your expectations and lifestyle.

Ask for references and recommendations

Word of mouth can be a valuable resource when considering adoption from a shelter or rescue. Reach out to friends, family members, and acquaintances who have adopted dogs from specific organizations and inquire about their experiences. Online forums, social media groups, and local community networks can also provide insights and recommendations regarding reputable shelters and rescues. Hearing firsthand accounts from fellow dog parents can help you make an informed decision about where to adopt.

Visit the shelter or rescue in person

Whenever possible, consider visiting the shelter or rescue in person before making a decision. This provides an opportunity to observe the dog’s behavior in a real-life setting, interact with them, and ask the staff questions. It also allows you to assess the living conditions, cleanliness, and overall environment of the facility. Meeting the dog in person can help you gauge your compatibility and make an informed choice.

While shelters and rescues typically have the best interests of dogs at heart, it’s crucial to acknowledge that sometimes, shelters or rescues lie about dogs. Bending the truth or withholding information has unintended and negative consequences. Transparency and open communication between shelters and potential adopters is in the best interest of everyone. Honesty ensures that dogs find homes where they can thrive and that adopters are ready for the responsibilities that come with pet parenthood. By being open and honest, shelters and rescues can better support both the dogs in their care and the families eager to provide them with loving homes.

Adopting a dog is a significant decision that comes with its share of excitement and challenges. As eager as you might be to welcome a canine companion into your life and your home, some shelters or rescue organizations might have reservations about your ability to be a dog parent. If you’ve recently had your dog adoption application rejected, it’s important to understand the potential reasons behind the rejection.

Sometimes, the reasons behind a rejected dog adoption application are in your control, and you can use the rejection as a learning experience to make your application stronger next time. In other cases, a particular shelter or rescue may just have excessively high standards. We’re going to uncover various factors that can contribute to application rejection so you can navigate the adoption process more successfully.

Why adoption applications get rejected

Incomplete or inaccurate information

Submitting an adoption application with incomplete or inaccurate information can cause shelters and rescues to hesitate. Organizations rely on comprehensive applications to make informed decisions about potential adopters. Missing or inaccurate details about your living situation, work schedule, and pet history can create doubt about your ability to provide a stable home. To improve your chances, ensure all sections of the application are filled out accurately, demonstrating your commitment and responsibility.

Mismatched lifestyles and needs

A common reason for application rejection is a misalignment between your lifestyle and the dog’s needs. Shelters prioritize placing dogs in homes that can meet their exercise, grooming, and attention requirements. If your living situation, such as residing in an apartment, doesn’t match the breed’s energy level or exercise needs, it could lead to rejection. Applying for a high-energy breed while living in a confined space may indicate a potential incompatibility.

Rental status

Renting instead of owning can impact your application’s outcome. Shelters want to ensure that you have permission to keep a dog in your rented space. Be transparent about your rental status, and provide documentation that demonstrates your landlord’s approval for pets. This proactive approach displays responsibility and increases your credibility as a potential adopter.

Insufficient yard space or fencing

While having a yard is advantageous, not having one or lacking proper fencing doesn’t necessarily lead to rejection. Shelters assess your ability to provide exercise and mental stimulation. Explain in your application how you plan to compensate for the lack of yard space, such as committing to regular walks and trips to dog parks. Demonstrating your dedication to meeting the dog’s needs can outweigh the absence of a yard.

Declining a home visit

Some shelters and rescues mandate a home visit as part of the adoption process. Declining a home visit may result in application rejection. Home visits allow organizations to assess the safety and suitability of your living environment for a new dog. It’s essential to view these visits as an opportunity to showcase your readiness for pet parenthood, rather than an intrusion of privacy. Welcoming the visit demonstrates your willingness to provide a loving home.

Lack of veterinary preparation

Not having an established veterinary relationship can hinder your adoption application’s success. Shelters want assurance that their dogs will receive proper medical care. Having a vet selected in advance signals your commitment to this responsibility. Include information about your chosen veterinarian or your plans to find one in your application to underscore your dedication to your future pet’s well-being.

Unresponsive references

References are a common requirement in adoption applications. If your references don’t respond promptly, it can lead to application rejection. To prevent this, inform your references beforehand about the potential for contact. This ensures they’re prepared to offer timely feedback and vouch for your suitability as a pet parent.

Current pet or child considerations

Having other pets or young children doesn’t automatically disqualify you from adopting a dog, but it requires thoughtful consideration. Shelters aim to ensure new pets integrate well with your existing household members. Provide information about your pets’ behavior and socialization skills, and explain your strategy for introducing a new dog. Similarly, demonstrate awareness of your young children’s needs and your approach to a safe and harmonious transition.

Lack of vaccinations for current pets

If your current pets aren’t up-to-date on vaccinations, it could lead to application rejection. Shelters prioritize the health and safety of their animals, and this includes protecting them from preventable diseases. Ensure that your existing pets are properly vaccinated before applying for a new addition. Providing proof of vaccinations shows your commitment to the well-being of all animals in your care.

Asking too many questions

They say there are no bad questions, but when it comes to adopting a dog, there can be too many. While we here at DogTime believe you should ask everything that’s on your mind to ensure a successful adoption, the sad fact is that shelters and rescues don’t always welcome questions. Excessive questioning may come across as skepticism or uncertainty.

It’s a scam

It’s unfortunate, but some people use pets as a way to scam people out of money or personal information. If you don’t hear back from a rescue organization or private pet parent after submitting an application, do some more digging. It may be that it’s a scam. Do your due diligence next time. And when you do adopt, make sure you read the adoption contract carefully, review vet records, and wait to pay until the dog is in your care.

Dealing with rejection

Experiencing a rejected dog adoption application is an opportunity to learn and improve. By addressing potential issues before you apply, you can enhance your prospects for a successful adoption. Remember, each application rejection brings you closer to finding the perfect canine companion that will thrive in your loving home. And if you’ve done everything you can do and are still getting rejected from shelters and rescues, remember that there’s more than one way to adopt a dog.
